Mine workers shot by Chinese manager get compensation
Kenneth Tachiona who was shot by his Chinese employer and senior manager at Reden farm has finally been compensated by the Chinese company. It is reported that the Chinese firm has so far paid out US 20 thousand dollars for medical bills towards the victim’s family as a way of mending fences.
In addition to that , it is also reported that the Chinese have also paid another unspecified amount as compensation to Kenneth’s family for the incident.
Leader of the Chinese business community in Zimbabwe David Zhou told a press briefing on Friday that the company had paid US 20 thousand dollars. He said they were doing the best they can under the circumstances and that the incident is regrettable. It is reported that Zhang Xuelin shot and fatally wounded another employee Wendy Chikwaira at Reden mine where he had confronted Zhang for refusing to pay in US dollars as agreed.
Zhang is currently languishing in remand prison after he failed to enter his plea due to the absence of an interpreter at his initial court hearing.He will remain in custody until 7 July. Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed that Zhang had been charged with attempted murder. Cases of ill treatment of local workers by Chinese employers have become rampant. Cases of poor remuneration as well as unhygienic working conditions have also been reported.
