The brawl which sparked Nechironga’s Caps exit
1990 Soccer Star of the year George Nechironga has revealed events which led to his Caps United exit almost two decades ago. Nechironga cites an incident in which Joel Shambo purportedly assaulted his father culminating in a brawl which sparked his exit at the green machine.
In an interview on popular online football programme In Touch With A Legend Nechironga said, “It may appear as though there are sour grapes which is why I have been quiet about it all along but the reason why I left caps united was that Joel Shambo disrespected my father by slapping him”. The conversation also reveals divisions which existed within the club with players from Mufakose and Glen Norah aligning themselves to which neighbourhood they came from.
The intriguing interview also reveals how family background had an influence in Nechironga’s decision to pursue the game of football given the history of his father Jawet Nechironga. George Nechironga began his football career at Caps United juniors before joining Darryn T. It is at Darryn where Nechironga believes he played his best football despite being crowned soccer star together with Peter Ndlovu during his days at Caps United.
The former forward also boasts of being one of the Zimbabwean footballers to play in Europe following a stint in Poland. From Poland Nechironga also spent some time in South Africa where he turned out for Free State Stars and Bloemfentein Celtic. The former striker also represented Zimbabwe and under 20 and senior level.
