SRC okays 2000 fans for Chibuku Super Cup matches

Things are slowly getting back on track in Zimbabwe’s football circles after the government through the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) okayed 2000 fully vaccinated fans into the stadia for the remaining games of the Chibuku Super Cup competition.

The development comes after several countries including Tanzania and Zambia among others allowed spectators back into the sporting facilities as their respective governments eased down COVID-19 lockdown restrictions.

In a statement, the SRC noted that the special waiver shall be in tandem with the laid down requirements specified in Statutory Instrument 228B of 2021 as well as the World Health Organisation guidelines on the safe resumption of sport.

“All spectators in Zone 3 and Zone 4, to have been vaccinated and bring their vaccination cards and positive identification to the match venue for inspection. Standard zoning of the stadium to separate the players, technical staff and other teams in the bio-secure bubbles, to be enforced. Allocation of spectators to respective bays to be arranged prior to the match and advised to all admitted persons. Presale tickets are therefore encouraged to improve logistical controls at venues,” read part of the statement to the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA).

Since the onset of lockdown in March 2019, Zimbabwe saw its football put to a grinding halt as part of containment measures for the spread of the disease and ever since the return of the game in May this year no fans were ever allowed in to the stadia.

Now with the Chibuku Super Cup competition entering the quarter finals stage, the admission of fans into match venues will be the first time in almost two years for Zimbabwe.
