MP Richard Tsvangirai Survives Car Accident While Driving from Parliament
Norton Member of Parliament Richard Tsvangirai was involved in a car accident on the Old Mazowe Road while returning from the New Parliament Building on the evening of October 21, 2024. Fortunately, Tsvangirai emerged from the incident unscathed, attributing his survival to divine intervention.
In a statement to Nehanda Radio, Tsvangirai confirmed the accident, stating, “Good morning, it is true that I had an accident on Old Mazowe Road on my way home from Parliament. Only God knows how and why I survived a near-fatal accident. We thank God for His protection and grace.” At the time of the accident, he was driving a new Toyota Fortuner that notably did not have number plates.
Richard Tsvangirai, the son of the late opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, has been representing the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party since the 2023 elections. His political career has been marked by a commitment to his constituency and a dedication to addressing the challenges facing Zimbabwe.
The accident highlights ongoing concerns regarding road safety in Zimbabwe, where poor infrastructure and high accident rates continue to be significant issues. According to the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ), the country recorded 2,099 deaths and 9,955 injuries from over 51,000 accidents in the previous year. Many accidents are attributed to the state of the roads, alongside human error, which often exacerbates the risk.
As discussions surrounding road safety continue, Tsvangirai’s experience serves as a reminder of the urgent need for improvements in infrastructure and driving conditions to ensure the safety of all road users in Zimbabwe.
