Nqobile Magwizi Considers Running for ZIFA Presidency
Sakunda Holdings’ project manager and Highlanders and Dynamos benefactor, Nqobile Magwizi, has confirmed that he is seriously contemplating a bid for the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) presidency in the upcoming elections.
Magwizi, who is also a board member of Banket United, addressed growing speculation on social media, stating that he is carefully evaluating his options before making a final decision.
“I have seen the rumours circulating on social media,” Magwizi shared. “What I can confirm is that I’m considering contesting for the ZIFA presidency. This is not a decision I take lightly, so I’m consulting with those close to me and football stakeholders before making my final decision.”
Backing from Sakunda Holdings
Magwizi’s potential candidacy is rumored to have the support of Kuda Tagwirei, the owner of Sakunda Holdings. While Magwizi has not explicitly commented on this, such backing could provide him with significant resources and influence in his campaign.
A Critical Time for ZIFA
ZIFA is at a pivotal juncture, with stakeholders urging for leadership that can restore its credibility and promote the development of Zimbabwean football. Magwizi’s entry into the race could inject fresh perspectives into the administration, given his experience and ties with the country’s football landscape.
Competition in the Race
Should Magwizi confirm his candidacy, he will face stiff competition from notable figures, including:
- Prophet Walter Magaya
- Marshall Gore
- Temba Mliswa
- Martin Kweza
- Philemon Machana
- Farai Jere
Timeline for the Elections
The nomination process for the ZIFA elections opened on November 25, 2024, and will close on December 11, 2024. The elections are scheduled for January 25, 2025, at Rainbow Towers in Harare.
Restoring Faith in Zimbabwean Football
With ZIFA facing challenges in governance and credibility, the upcoming elections offer a chance for the association to redefine its future. Whether Magwizi officially joins the race or not, the elections will undoubtedly be a critical moment for the country’s football fraternity.
Football enthusiasts and stakeholders alike will be watching closely to see how this leadership contest unfolds.
