Khama Billiat Faces Financial Woes Amid Outstanding Debts

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns star Khama Billiat is reportedly facing significant financial difficulties, with outstanding debts totaling millions of rands. One of the major financial issues involves an outstanding debt of approximately R372,066 owed to Standard Bank from an overdraft facility taken in 2020.

While Billiat consistently made payments on the debt until 2023, reports indicate that he has since defaulted on monthly installments, which ranged between R80,000 and R90,000. Since the Zimbabwean footballer relocated to his home country, legal efforts to serve him with a summons have so far been unsuccessful.

In addition to the Standard Bank overdraft, Billiat also reportedly owes over R1.7 million from a home loan used to purchase a property in Midrand, South Africa. The creditor, Emerging Markets Home Loans, has since sought an eviction order against the occupants of the property after Billiat allegedly ceased making payments following his transfer to Yadah FC in March 2024. The property was subsequently set to be auctioned to recover the outstanding amount.

During his tenure with Kaizer Chiefs, Billiat was one of the highest earners in the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL), though his exact salary was never publicly disclosed. However, his return to Zimbabwe saw him become the highest-paid player in the country while playing for Yadah FC, earning around R95,500 (approximately US$5,000) per month during the 2024 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season.

Following the expiration of his contract with Yadah FC in December 2024, Billiat secured a move to Scottland FC in Zimbabwe. Despite playing in a relatively modest league, he remained the most expensive player in the country. Although his signing-on fee at Scottland FC has not been officially disclosed, reports suggest that he received approximately US$40,000 (around R748,000) upon joining the club in January 2025.

The financial challenges faced by Billiat serve as a stark reminder of the financial pitfalls that professional athletes can encounter, particularly when transitioning between clubs and managing substantial personal expenditures. While his on-field talent remains undisputed, the looming debts and legal battles may pose a significant challenge for the Zimbabwean footballer in the coming months.
