Hundreds of Youths in Harare’s Glen View Suburb Empowered Through Digital Skills Training Under the Digitruck Programme

In a significant move to bridge the digital divide and equip the youth for the rapidly evolving technological world, hundreds of young people in Glen View, a high-density suburb in Harare, have successfully completed digital skills training under the government’s Digitruck Programme. The initiative, designed to foster digital proficiency, aims to open doors for young people to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven economy.

The Information Communication Technology, Postal, and Courier Services Minister, Tatenda Mavetera, who graced the training session, underscored the importance of digital skills for the youth, particularly in fostering innovation and enabling them to compete in the digital economy. Mavetera highlighted that the goal of the programme is to create a technologically advanced society that can harness digital innovations to improve lives.

“Our aim is to build a technologically proficient society capable of maximising digital innovation. Young people will be given direction by having such skills, and this initiative will be cascaded to every corner in Zimbabwe. We are not going to leave anyone behind,” said Mavetera during the event on Tuesday.

The timing of this initiative is also notable, coinciding with the upcoming parliamentary by-election in Glen View South, scheduled for April 12, following the unfortunate death of opposition CCC lawmaker Grandmore Hakata earlier this year.

Tsitsi Tawomhera, the Zanu PF candidate for Glen View South, lauded the Digitruck Programme as a game-changer for the youth in the area. She emphasized that the programme would empower young people with the necessary skills to navigate and succeed in the digital world. “As a party, we guarantee such developments that benefit communities. More of these projects will be introduced because we understand that we are living in a technologically advanced world, and youths should be equipped with relevant skills,” Tawomhera remarked.

The Glen View youth were given hands-on training, which will undoubtedly enhance their career prospects. The skills gained are expected to open up new avenues for employment and entrepreneurship, with the potential to contribute to the growth of Zimbabwe’s digital economy.

The Digitruck Programme, which brings mobile digital training units to underserved areas, is not limited to Glen View. The programme will be rolled out across all provinces in Zimbabwe, ensuring that citizens from every background, regardless of their location, can participate in the global digital economy.

As the programme continues to expand, it marks another crucial step towards closing the digital divide in Zimbabwe and empowering communities with the tools and knowledge needed for success in today’s digital age. This initiative is a testament to the government’s commitment to equipping the youth with the skills needed to succeed in a world that is rapidly embracing technology.
