Tichaona Tiakudze and 911 Band Set to Launch Debut Album Celebrating Zimbabwe’s Musical Heritage

Tichaona Tiakudze, the dynamic frontman of the rising Afro-fusion outfit 911 Band, has confirmed that their long-anticipated debut album will officially be released next month. The announcement comes fresh off the heels of a lively and well-received performance at Gava’s Restaurant in Harare last Friday, where the group showcased their electrifying stage presence.

Speaking to NewsDay Life & Style, Tiakudze expressed both pride and excitement about the upcoming project, which features tracks such as Nyanga Dzamushore, Paukama, Ubuntu, Karomo Kapikiri, Shinga, Parere Nhema, Ndomene and Chinoshura. The album promises a fusion of timeless Zimbabwean rhythms with a contemporary twist, all wrapped in powerful storytelling and cultural reflection.

Tiakudze emphasized the band’s commitment to preserving Zimbabwe’s rich musical roots, saying, “We strive to keep the music of our legends, which is mostly on vinyl records, CDs and cassettes, alive through live performances. The 911 Band was formed with a shared passion for preserving Zimbabwe’s rich musical heritage and has evolved into a powerhouse ensemble.”

The group’s approach combines traditional sounds with modern influences to reach both local and global audiences. “In our forthcoming Afro-fusion debut album, we have permeated ancient musical styles and modal harmonies to bring together both local and international audiences. We do social commentary, counselling, give people hope and guide them into prayers,” Tiakudze added.

The 911 Band’s live shows are earning them a growing following, and their performance at Gava’s Restaurant was no exception. A standout moment of the night featured a cross-cultural collaboration with American music education student Caden Davis and Zimbabwean percussionist Taffie Matiure. Their contribution using shakers and traditional instruments added a rich layer to the group’s already vibrant sound.

Music legend and celebrated producer Mono Mukundu further elevated the performance by joining the band on guitar, playing beloved tracks originally performed by icons Leonard Dembo and Oliver Mtukudzi. His presence served as a bridge between generations, reinforcing the 911 Band’s mission to honour and continue the legacy of Zimbabwean music.

The band itself is made up of a talented ensemble: Tiakudze leads with vocals, supported by Mathew Mabhengo on bass, Clemence Shirichena on lead guitar, Tanatswa Yatama on keyboards, Peniel Kariteni on acoustic guitar, and Tinashe Mugari on drums. Each member brings their own flair and musical discipline, contributing to the collective’s unique and polished sound.

“We believe we were born to do this and we’re grateful for every fan who’s walked this journey with us,” said Tiakudze, reflecting on the band’s journey so far.

With their debut album just weeks away, the 911 Band is poised to make a lasting impact on the Zimbabwean music scene and beyond, uniting generations through rhythm, soul, and cultural pride.
