Mai Charamba Celebrates 30 Years in Gospel Music and Shows No Sign of Retiring

Olivia Charamba, popularly known as Mai Charamba, celebrates thirty years in the gospel music industry without plans to retire. Speaking to Nehanda Radio, she described herself as “too young to become a retiree” and emphasized her commitment to her calling.
From the era of cassettes and CDs to today’s social media-driven music landscape, Mai Charamba and her husband, Pastor Charles Charamba, have maintained a consistent gospel message. Their work has focused on delivering the word of Jesus Christ rather than chasing trends or clout.
This year, Mai Charamba released her third album, Olive Branch, as part of the ‘Thirty Years Trinity Songs’ project marking three decades of music ministry. She explained that her focus on her calling has been key to maintaining consistency in her work and avoiding distractions from criticism or negative situations.
“We have learnt to focus on our calling and not be swayed by negative situations and criticism,” Mai Charamba said. She noted that fan demand plays a big role in her decision to continue performing. “As long as the Lord permits and grants life, we will continue in our music ministry. Retiring definitely becomes a crime considering the outcry from my fans,” she added.
Despite changes in the music industry over three decades, Mai Charamba believes her work remains impactful. “Our music is timeless; it will always have impact regardless of circumstances. The message is timeless and never changes because we sing the word of God as it is,” she said.
She also highlighted originality as the key to longevity in music. Mai Charamba observed that some musicians prioritize marketing over the quality of their art, creating hype without lasting value. For her, focusing on the art itself ensures that her music remains relevant and meaningful over time.
Through decades of ministry, Mai Charamba has maintained her dedication to gospel music, proving that consistency, focus, and authenticity can sustain a career in a changing industry.
