Tafadzwanashe Muzhari Revives Jazz in Zimbabwe with Saxophone and Soul

In an era dominated by electronic beats and auto-tuned vocals, 25-year-old Tafadzwanashe Tsepokang Muzhari is making a name for himself in Zimbabwe’s music scene with live jazz performances that defy digital trends. Armed with a saxophone and a passion for authentic sound, he is redefining what it means to be a modern jazz musician in the country.

A native of Bulawayo and a music educator at Kyle College in Masvingo, Muzhari blends performance and teaching with purpose. His music tells stories of emotion, struggle, freedom, and soul, each note demonstrating the enduring power of live instrumentation. “I’ve always admired the richness of the saxophone. I wanted an instrument that speaks deeply — something rare — and the sax does exactly that,” he said.

Muzhari credits jazz with offering creative freedom unmatched by other genres, allowing him to explore dissonance, alterations, and unique voicings while still maintaining musical coherence. “That freedom is what keeps me inspired,” he explained, highlighting the improvisational and expressive possibilities inherent in jazz.

Growing up in a family of four brothers, all musicians, Muzhari was immersed in creativity from an early age. That foundation shaped him into both a performer and an educator. He acknowledges the support of his family and Kyle College, which has allowed him to develop initiatives that introduce students to the depth and discipline of music. “They have supported every musical idea I’ve wanted to implement. That support allows me to grow while helping others discover their musical voices,” he said.

Beyond personal performance and teaching, Muzhari sees himself as part of a wider mission to sustain jazz for future generations. He encourages young musicians to focus on the joy of playing rather than the pressures of starting strong.

Through each performance, Muzhari demonstrates that jazz in Zimbabwe is far from obsolete. His work shows that live, soulful, and human music continues to have a place in the modern entertainment landscape, evolving while staying true to its roots.
