Esrom Nyandoro Launches Foundation to Transform Lives Through Education and Football

Former Zimbabwe international and Mamelodi Sundowns legend Esrom Nyandoro officially launched the Esrom Nyandoro Foundation at a gala dinner held at the Four Seasons Hotel West Cliff on December 13. The event marked a new chapter in his mission to use education and football to create opportunities for young people from disadvantaged communities.
The foundation aims to support over 200 learners in 2026, combining academic assistance with structured football development. Foundation Manager Vimbai Andreas told Soccer Laduma that 60 students benefited from the programme in 2025, and the foundation plans to expand its reach through football training camps next year. These camps will identify talent, instill discipline, teach life skills, and provide mentorship for aspiring young footballers.
A highlight of the evening was when bursary recipients met Nyandoro for the first time. Students addressed guests with heartfelt speeches, sharing how the foundation had transformed their lives by giving them access to education they once thought was out of reach. Andreas described the moment as one of the most emotional of the evening.
Nyandoro shared his personal journey, reflecting on his upbringing in poverty. “I grew up in poverty, sharing two rooms with a big family. I played football barefoot on dusty streets and worried more about surviving than dreaming. Football saved me, and education sustained me. Today, I am trying to give a child the chance I once prayed for,” he said.
As part of the fundraising efforts, Nyandoro sold memorabilia from his playing career. Signed and framed jerseys have already raised R50,000, with proceeds going directly towards school fees. One historic jersey, worn during his famous goal in African football history, is on auction with an offer of R120,000 and an official valuation of R200,000. The full amount will cover school fees for January 2026.
The gala brought together football stakeholders, business leaders, and community partners, highlighting the role sport can play in social development. Nyandoro, who has contributed to Mamelodi Sundowns as a player, scout, and coach for over two decades, emphasised the foundation’s focus on sustainable impact. “There is a child right now who cannot celebrate Christmas because they are worried about whether they will return to school in January. This foundation exists to change that reality,” he said.
With education at its core and football as its heartbeat, the Esrom Nyandoro Foundation aims not only to create players but also to change lives, offering young people the tools to succeed both on and off the pitch.
