Sylvester “Freeman” Chizanga Opens Up on Busy 2025 and Plans for 2026

Zim dancehall stalwart Sylvester “Freeman” Chizanga revealed that last year’s packed schedule pushed him to take sleeping tablets as he battled exhaustion. The HKD boss, who will turn 38 on June 22, credits consistency and professionalism for his achievements in the music industry.

Reflecting on 2025, Freeman admitted that he nearly faced burnout due to an exceptionally busy programme, especially during the festive season. “There was a point when we had to hold at least three shows per day. It was a tight schedule that prompted me to employ relief drivers to avoid road accidents,” he said. He added, “At one point, I had to take sleeping tablets because the situation had spiralled out of control, and I had no choice.” Despite the challenges, Freeman expressed gratitude for the success his hard work has brought.

Looking ahead to the first half of 2026, Freeman has lined up international shows in Poland, Germany, and the United Kingdom. “I am not bragging about my international breakthrough; I am simply saying that we are celebrating the Lord’s mercy, which has brought us this far,” he reflected. Having started his career in 2009, the “Joina City” hit-maker has become a major figure in Zimbabwean music thanks to his relentless work ethic.

Freeman emphasized the importance of professionalism and dedication in his rise. “From the day I decided to pursue music as a career, I firmly believe that the Lord has a lot in store for me. I always push my colleagues to work hard, and this has been the secret behind our progress and success,” he said. He added that he will continue to work tirelessly to reach new heights and ensure his team grows together.

Preparations for the annual HKD Festival, held every October, have already begun. Freeman explained, “October might be seven months away, but the real planning for this festival, which has become a permanent feature on the showbiz calendar, has started. After evaluating last year’s edition, we never rest.” He also stressed the importance of keeping his team engaged to maintain momentum and achieve success as a group.

As a youth icon and mentor, Freeman continues to empower emerging artists. “I always give upcoming stars the exposure they need, including female artists. I was assisted by others before, and it is my turn to return the favour by helping others,” he said. Freeman remains committed to nurturing new talent while balancing his own international and local projects.
