Ezimnyama Dance Ensemble Marks 17 Years of Showcasing Zimbabwean Culture

On February 9, 2009, visionary creative Phibion Ncube founded Ezimnyama Dance Ensemble in Bulawayo with a mission to showcase Zimbabwean culture through dance. Joined by co-founders Josam Mwanza and Juliet Dube, the troupe has grown over 17 years into one of Zimbabwe’s most innovative and widely travelled dance companies. Ezimnyama has performed in countries including Botswana, South Africa, Switzerland, France, and Spain, earning acclaim and awards along the way. The group’s members include a talented mix of male and female performers, each contributing to its dynamic style and cultural storytelling. Their commitment to quality, discipline, and creativity has cemented their reputation as a trusted name in the Zimbabwean dance industry.

Ezimnyama celebrated its 17th anniversary on February 9, 2026, marking a milestone that reflects both endurance and artistic growth. Speaking to Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, director Phibion Ncube described the achievement as a dream come true. The celebration includes the premiere of their newest music and dance production in Bulawayo, with plans to tour across Zimbabwe. Ncube emphasized the importance of passing knowledge to the younger generation, providing an opportunity for aspiring artists to learn from the troupe’s decades of experience. The ensemble’s ability to adapt and maintain relevance in a competitive industry has been driven by consistency, originality, and high-quality performances.

International exposure has been central to Ezimnyama’s evolution. Ncube noted that overseas performances offered valuable lessons in artistry, originality, and cultural representation. Collaborating with international performers improved their craft and strengthened their global presence. Among the troupe’s most memorable achievements was performing in 2024 for His Excellency President Mnangagwa and President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya in Bulawayo. These experiences have solidified the group’s mission to promote Zimbabwean culture and position the country as a leading cultural destination.

Looking ahead, Ezimnyama plans to premiere its new production locally before taking it overseas, including collaborations with Swiss artists visiting Zimbabwe. The troupe aims to expand cultural exchange programs, inviting international artists to engage with Zimbabwean heritage while providing a platform for the next generation of performers. Despite challenges securing financial support for international travel, Ncube remains committed to excellence and encourages aspiring dance groups to invest in high-quality productions, discipline, and creative innovation.

Ezimnyama Dance Ensemble’s 17-year journey highlights resilience, creativity, and the power of cultural storytelling. Their work celebrates Zimbabwean identity while connecting with global audiences, ensuring that the country’s dance heritage continues to thrive. Through international tours, innovative productions, and mentorship of young artists, Ezimnyama remains a beacon of cultural pride and artistic excellence, inspiring both local and international communities.
