Rutendo Jackie Releases Culturally Grounded Afro-Fusion Album “Zindoga”

Zimbabwean Afro-fusion songstress Rutendo Jackie has unveiled her latest project, a 13-track album titled “Zindoga”, which blends traditional folk influences with contemporary African sounds. The album explores themes of love, unity, jealousy, faith, identity and heritage, presenting a rich tapestry of personal and cultural storytelling. Rooted in acoustic and indigenous instrumentation, “Zindoga” channels folklore through modern Afro-fusion, allowing Rutendo to honor ancestral sounds while pushing creative boundaries. Its release coincided with her birthday, symbolizing a personal and artistic rebirth after years of exploration and growth. The album title, loosely translated as “loner”, frames solitude as a space for reflection, resilience and creative maturity rather than isolation.

The project features collaborations with seven artists, eight producers and a variety of live musicians, highlighting Rutendo’s commitment to musical depth and authenticity. Standout tracks include “Bvumai” featuring Chiweddar and Greffen Punkk, the title track “Zindoga”, “Usacheme” featuring Sylent Nqo, and “Ka 2 Dhora” featuring Peter Ngoreta. From tender love ballads to inspirational anthems, the album integrates shebeen-infused grooves, Amapiano, Afrobeat and layered harmonies, maintaining a balance between intimacy and expansive soundscapes. Rutendo also reimagines a song from her late father Peter Ngoreta’s performing catalogue, bridging generations and honoring her musical lineage. This gesture reinforces the album’s cultural grounding and personal significance.

Rutendo explained to Weekender Entertainment that “Zindoga” reflects quiet seasons of solitude that shape character and creativity. She emphasized the importance of traditional Zimbabwean elements such as the mbira, storytelling and layered harmonies, while embracing modern Afro-fusion influences across Africa. The birthday release marked a symbolic step into a new phase of confidence, clarity and artistic purpose. She hopes listeners feel comforted, seen and connected to their roots through the album’s narratives and sound.

Manager Diana Elisha Nheera highlighted that “Zindoga” represents Rutendo’s artistic evolution and her dedication to cultural preservation. Each collaboration, instrument and lyric was carefully chosen to align with Rutendo’s vision of modernizing Zimbabwean heritage while retaining authenticity. Nheera added that the album positions Rutendo on the continental stage, offering universal themes wrapped in African musical identity. “Zindoga” continues the legacy of cultural pioneers such as Mbuya Stella Chiweshe, Chioniso Maraire and Busie Ncube, establishing Rutendo as a torchbearer for a generation that honors tradition while expanding its sound internationally.

Rutendo Jackie’s career trajectory demonstrates consistent growth, from her 2023 EP “Tsvimbo Nedohwe” to her breakthrough project “Love Me As I Am”. She has earned recognition from the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce Women in Arts and Culture Award and the Manicaland Creatives Awards Best Female Artiste Award. Performing regularly in Harare with her Afro Blue Band, she has captivated audiences at venues including Gava Restaurant, Jam Tree and Theatre in the Park. Married and a mother of two, Rutendo continues to navigate a male-dominated industry with focus and determination, establishing her Zimbabwean-rooted Afro-fusion sound on the global stage.
