Intotal Band: From Humble Beginnings to Zimbabwe’s Live Music Powerhouse

What began as a casual idea between two friends in 2014 has grown into one of Zimbabwe’s most compelling live music experiences. Dr Joseph Chinouriri and his friend Naphtali came together to form a band for a single event, never imagining it would evolve into a long-term project. One festival booking led to another, additional musicians joined, and creative chemistry formed, ultimately giving birth to Intotal Band. From the start, their mission was clear: to create meaningful, creative opportunities for musicians while producing music that resonates with people. This vision continues to guide every aspect of their work and performances.
Over the years, Intotal Band has built a reputation on consistency, perseverance, and focus. Unlike many groups that falter under creative differences, the band thrives on collaboration and mutual respect. With multiple highly talented members, the creative process can be challenging, but their unity allows them to move forward together. “It’s not easy, as we have very creative and talented people in the group, but we choose unity,” Chinouriri said. That commitment to collaboration has transformed the band from a festival act into a seasoned live powerhouse capable of delivering performances that educate, inspire, and refine their sound.
Live shows have been central to Intotal Band’s growth, shaping their identity and strengthening their confidence. Each performance serves as a master class in understanding audience connection, allowing the band to fine-tune its music and stage presence. Inspired by Zimbabwean legends, the band draws heavily from the rich musical heritage of Oliver Mtukudzi and Tuku Music. These influences are channeled into a contemporary sound that remains deeply rooted in culture, blending traditional storytelling with modern musical techniques. Their philosophy is simple yet powerful: music belongs to the people, and their work is designed to resonate on a personal level with every listener.
Despite facing challenges and setbacks common to the music industry, Intotal Band has remained consistent and true to its sound. Chinouriri emphasizes the importance of resilience, saying that the real test is the ability to rise and continue after setbacks. This dedication has positioned the band to take on major appearances that promise to further cement their reputation. They are scheduled to perform at Ecobank Legends Night on April 11 at the Harare International Conference Centre and again on June 13 at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair grounds in Bulawayo. These stages serve not just as events, but as opportunities to connect with audiences on a meaningful level.
Intotal Band’s journey from a single event in 2014 to commanding some of Zimbabwe’s biggest stages is proof that passion, perseverance, and unity produce extraordinary results. In an industry often driven by trends, the band has built a mature brand grounded in culture, collaboration, and dedication to craft. Their story demonstrates that when musicians focus on impact rather than numbers, their music can achieve lasting significance. As they continue to grow, Intotal Band remains a benchmark for excellence in live performance and a shining example of Zimbabwean artistry on the national stage.
