Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Transport Empowers Young Women in STEM and Transport Careers

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development in Zimbabwe has launched a targeted initiative to inspire schoolgirls across Harare to consider careers in transport, aviation and other STEM-related fields. Held as part of Women’s Month commemorations, the programme aims to expose young women to the wide range of opportunities available within sectors traditionally dominated by men. Operating under the theme “Women in Transport: Driving the Future — Inspiring the Next Generation in STEM and Transport Careers,” the event brings learners together with key institutions in the transport sector. By providing direct engagement and career guidance, the initiative seeks to empower girls with the knowledge and confidence to pursue ambitious career paths. The event reflects a broader government commitment to promoting gender equality and participation in strategic industries.

Engineer Joy Makumbe, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry, explained that the initiative is part of deliberate efforts to increase female representation in professional areas that have historically had low participation by women. She emphasised that government policies and recruitment processes are increasingly designed to encourage women to apply for positions across all sectors. According to Eng Makumbe, recruitment advertisements now explicitly state that women are encouraged to apply, signalling a shift from traditional gender norms in the workplace. She noted that opportunities are now available to anyone with the capacity to deliver, making gender less of a barrier in previously male-dominated professions. This proactive approach is intended to create a pipeline of skilled women ready to contribute to Zimbabwe’s transport and STEM sectors.

The programme also focuses on career guidance and early awareness to equip students with the information needed to make informed decisions about their futures. Eng Makumbe highlighted that ministries are now actively running initiatives where students can learn about different professions, the required academic pathways and potential career progression. She emphasised that exposure at an early stage allows girls to understand the subjects and skills necessary to succeed in these fields. By addressing gaps in knowledge and opportunity, the Ministry hopes to increase the number of young women who pursue careers in areas like civil aviation, engineering and railway management. Early engagement ensures that students can plan their education to align with their career aspirations.

Participation from parastatal organisations under the Ministry has been central to the event’s success. Agencies including the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe, Airports Company of Zimbabwe, National Railways of Zimbabwe, Air Zimbabwe, Zinara and National Aviation Services presented detailed information about career paths within their organisations. Representatives shared insights into daily operations, the skills required, and potential growth opportunities, giving students a practical understanding of what careers in transport and aviation entail. This direct interaction allows learners to ask questions, gain mentorship, and envision themselves in roles that were previously unfamiliar. It also helps bridge the awareness gap, particularly in sectors such as civil aviation where female representation remains low.

Eng Makumbe stressed that initiatives like this are vital for fostering a more inclusive workforce and for ensuring that women can fully participate in national development. By exposing girls to career possibilities and providing mentorship, the Ministry is creating pathways that could lead to meaningful contributions in STEM and transport sectors. The programme is a practical demonstration of the government’s commitment to gender equality, skill development, and long-term workforce planning. It highlights the importance of visibility, guidance, and early intervention in shaping career trajectories for young women.
