Tich Mataz Culpable Homicide Case Resurfaces as Veteran Broadcaster Faces Court Over 2024 Fatal Accident

Veteran Zimbabwean broadcaster Tichafa Augustine Matambanadzo is once again in the spotlight, but this time for serious legal reasons linked to a fatal road accident that occurred in 2024. The well-known radio and television personality, who has built a long career in broadcasting across Zimbabwe and South Africa, recently appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court in connection with a culpable homicide charge. His court appearance on 14 April 2026 has drawn widespread public attention, especially as it comes shortly after his announcement as part of the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s Channel Africa team. The case has placed his professional resurgence under intense scrutiny as legal proceedings continue to unfold. The matter is now set to proceed to trial, keeping both media and public interest firmly fixed on the developments.

According to court proceedings, the case relates to a tragic incident that took place on 27 July 2024 along Samora Machel Avenue in Harare. Prosecutors allege that Matambanadzo was driving a Toyota Hilux with three passengers when the vehicle struck a pedestrian identified as Daniel Uchena, aged 44. The accident reportedly occurred near Odzi Flats in Eastlea while the victim was walking along the road. Following the impact, Uchena sustained severe internal injuries and was rushed to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The State argues that the broadcaster failed to maintain proper control of his vehicle and did not take reasonable action to avoid the collision.

The State further alleges that negligence played a central role in the accident. Prosecutor Charlotte Gomani told the court that Matambanadzo failed to keep a proper lookout of the road ahead and did not stop or react appropriately when the danger became apparent. It is also alleged that he was driving above a safe speed for the conditions at the time of the incident. His vehicle, a Toyota Hilux, reportedly sustained damage to the front right bumper and windshield and was later examined by the Vehicle Examination Department in Eastlea. The prosecution maintains that these factors combined to support the charge of culpable homicide as the case proceeds through the justice system.

During his court appearance, Matambanadzo was not asked to plead and was remanded out of custody. The court session was presided over by Harare magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai, with the next hearing scheduled for 19 May 2026, when the trial is expected to begin. Since he was brought before the court through a summons, bail proceedings did not take place. The legal process remains in its early stages, and further evidence will be examined when the matter returns to court. The outcome of the trial is expected to have significant implications for both his personal and professional life.

The case has also reignited public discussion about Matambanadzo’s long and controversial history in the media industry. Over the years, he has faced multiple legal and disciplinary issues that have periodically interrupted his broadcasting career. In 2009, he was arrested in connection with allegations involving the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s Basic Commodities Supply Side Intervention programme. Later, in 2013, he was suspended by Star FM over fraud-related allegations, before being reinstated in 2014. These earlier incidents have contributed to a public perception of repeated legal entanglements throughout his career.

Further legal trouble followed in 2017 when Matambanadzo was convicted of smuggling clothes and shoes from China into Zimbabwe. He was fined for the offence, adding another layer to his history of court cases. Despite these setbacks, he has continued to secure roles in broadcasting, maintaining a presence in both radio and television over the years. His recent appointment to South African Broadcasting Corporation’s Channel Africa had been seen as a major professional milestone and a potential return to broader regional influence. However, the current case now casts uncertainty over his latest career move.

As the legal process unfolds, attention will remain focused on both the facts of the case and the broader implications for his broadcasting future. The charge of culpable homicide carries serious weight under Zimbabwean law, and the court will need to determine whether negligence played a direct role in the fatal accident. The proceedings are expected to include detailed examination of witness testimony, vehicle assessments, and road conditions at the time of the incident. Public interest remains high due to Matambanadzo’s long-standing profile in the media industry and his recent professional resurgence.

The case of Tich Mataz highlights how quickly personal and professional trajectories can shift when legal issues arise. What was meant to be a fresh chapter in his broadcasting career has now become closely linked to a serious criminal trial. As he prepares to return to court in May, the outcome will determine not only legal accountability but also the future of his work in broadcasting. For now, the matter remains before the courts, with further developments expected as the trial progresses.
