Wilfred Mashaya Makes Zimbabwean Sports History with Double Victory at the 2026 National Sports Awards

Zimbabwean martial arts legend Wilfred Mashaya, popularly known as The Zim Ninja, has secured his place in the country’s sporting history after receiving two prestigious honours at the 2026 Annual National Sports Awards (ANSA). Mashaya was crowned the winner of the inaugural People’s Choice Award before later receiving the Coach of the Year Silver Award during the same ceremony. His remarkable achievement made him the first Zimbabwean martial artist and the first member of the country’s Uniformed Forces to claim both awards at a single ANSA event. The historic ceremony, held on 15 May 2026 at the Casino Marina, Longcheng Plaza in Harare, brought together Zimbabwe’s finest athletes, coaches, administrators and sporting leaders to celebrate excellence across various sporting disciplines. For Mashaya, the unforgettable evening represented not only personal success but also recognition of years spent developing young people and promoting martial arts across Zimbabwe.

The awards ceremony was officiated by Guest of Honour Anselem Sanyatwe and showcased the country’s outstanding sporting achievements over the past year. Athletes from different sporting codes gathered under one roof as Zimbabwe celebrated those who had excelled both locally and internationally. The event highlighted the growing strength of Zimbabwean sport while recognising individuals who continue to inspire future generations. For Mashaya, standing among the nation’s top athletes was another milestone in a career built on discipline, sacrifice and service. His double recognition reflected not only his sporting accomplishments but also his growing influence as a mentor and leader within Zimbabwe’s sporting community.

One of the biggest highlights of the evening was the presentation of the People’s Choice Award, which was decided entirely through public voting. The award, introduced for the first time during the 2025 ANSA ceremony, gave Zimbabweans the opportunity to recognise the athlete who had made the greatest impact on them. Mashaya emerged as the clear winner after receiving an impressive 7,816 votes from more than 15,000 votes cast nationwide. The result demonstrated that his popularity extends well beyond the martial arts community and into the hearts of sports fans across the country. Winning an award chosen directly by the public made the achievement especially meaningful because it reflected the trust and admiration he has earned through years of dedication.

Mashaya was selected ahead of an outstanding group of nominees representing some of Zimbabwe’s biggest sporting stars. The shortlist included accomplished athletes such as Vimbayi Maisvorewa, Isaac Mpofu, Tapiwanashe Makarawu, Makanakaishe Charamba, Sikandar Raza, Brian Bennett, Marshall Munetsi, Emmanuel Jalai, Tawanda Maswanhise, Beavan Sibanda, Thandazile Ndlovu, Kudzai Weston Mashawi, Chido Maenzanise and Sasha Chimedza. Overcoming such strong competition made his victory even more significant. It reflected the widespread respect he has earned through both his sporting achievements and community work. His victory also highlighted the growing recognition of martial arts as an important part of Zimbabwe’s sporting landscape.

When broadcaster Eugie Chidhakwa announced Mashaya as the People’s Choice Award winner, the venue erupted into loud applause. Mashaya later described the emotional moment by saying that time seemed to stand still as he walked toward the stage. Every step reminded him of the years of sacrifice, hard work, discipline and perseverance that had shaped his journey. His acceptance speech began with heartfelt gratitude to Almighty God, whom he credited for giving him life, talent and the strength to overcome every obstacle. He acknowledged that every achievement throughout his career had been made possible through faith and determination.

The celebrations continued later in the evening when Mashaya’s name was announced once again, this time as the recipient of the Coach of the Year Silver Award. Receiving two prestigious honours during one ceremony elevated the night into a historic moment for Zimbabwean sport. The achievement established him as the first Zimbabwean martial artist to win two ANSA awards at a single event. It also made him the first member of Zimbabwe’s Uniformed Forces to accomplish such a remarkable feat. These milestones further cemented his reputation as one of the country’s most accomplished martial artists and respected sports leaders.

While many athletes measure success by medals and trophies, Mashaya believes his greatest achievements happen away from competition. As an ICO World Champion and founder of the Zim Ninja Academy, he has dedicated much of his life to empowering young people through martial arts. His academy focuses on developing discipline, confidence, leadership and resilience while helping children and young adults avoid drug and substance abuse. Mashaya has repeatedly said that his mission has never been about collecting awards but about transforming lives. Every training session is designed to build character and provide young Zimbabweans with opportunities to develop positive values that will benefit them throughout life.

Mashaya believes martial arts can become a powerful tool for changing communities by giving young people purpose and direction. He sees every dojo as a place where future leaders are developed through discipline, respect and commitment. According to him, helping one young person avoid drugs or crime represents a victory greater than winning any championship. His programmes continue to attract young people from different backgrounds who are looking for guidance and positive role models. Through his academy, he has created an environment where sport becomes a pathway to personal growth and lifelong success.

During his acceptance speech, Mashaya expressed sincere appreciation to every Zimbabwean who voted for him and supported his journey. He thanked the public for believing in his work and promised to continue representing Zimbabwe with pride on the international stage. He also acknowledged his fellow nominees, saying each athlete deserved recognition for their contributions to Zimbabwean sport. Mashaya extended his gratitude to Commissioner-General of Police Stephen Mutamba, the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the Zimbabwe Karate Union, Zim Ninja Academy, the Sports and Recreation Commission, the Ministry of Sports, his family, friends, supporters and members of the media. He emphasised that the awards belonged to everyone who believes in discipline, unity, service and hard work.

Wilfred Mashaya’s remarkable double victory at the 2026 Annual National Sports Awards represents far more than personal recognition. His journey from humble beginnings to becoming a world champion, respected coach and influential youth mentor has inspired countless Zimbabweans to believe that determination can overcome adversity. Through the Zim Ninja Academy, he continues to shape the next generation by promoting discipline, education and positive choices while fighting the destructive effects of drug and substance abuse. His historic achievement has elevated the profile of martial arts in Zimbabwe and demonstrated the important role sport can play in transforming communities. As Zimbabwe celebrated his success, the nation also celebrated resilience, faith, humility and hope, qualities that continue to define The Zim Ninja both inside and outside the dojo.
