Xantel Makes a Bold Entry into Zimbabwe’s Music Scene with Debut EP Usizo

Afro-soul newcomer Xantel, born Chantel Gugulethu Sibanda, has marked a significant milestone in her musical career with the launch of her debut EP, Usizo, at a packed Bulawayo Theatre on Friday night. The event drew a full house, with fans eagerly attending to witness the singer’s first major public performance. Xantel described the experience as surreal, reflecting on years of writing and refining her music in private before finally sharing it with a live audience. The evening combined energetic performances, audience engagement, and a showcase of Xantel’s unique sound, signaling her arrival as a rising voice in Zimbabwe’s Afro-pop and soul scene. Her launch has been widely praised for delivering a fresh, authentic musical experience distinct from prevailing trends such as Amapiano.
The EP launch was complemented by supporting performances from Bhila, Khwezi, Amany, Butholezwe, and Mjabulisi the Poet, all of whom helped energize the crowd and set the stage for Xantel’s headlining act. Audience reactions highlighted the originality of her music, which blends Afro-pop, R&B, and soul in a way that distinguishes her from other emerging artists. “The show was amazing. Her music really stands out. While many artistes are opting for Amapiano, she has chosen to remain true to Afro-pop,” said attendee Brian Moyo. Another fan, Mbusiswa Nyathi, described the performance as vibrant and predicted a promising trajectory for Xantel. The positive response from fans emphasized her potential to carve out a unique space within Zimbabwe’s dynamic music industry.
Xantel shared insights into the creative process behind Usizo, revealing that the songs are deeply personal and inspired by her own life experiences. She described the production journey as emotional, noting moments of both challenge and discovery while exploring different sounds and techniques. “It was a rollercoaster of emotions. At times, I got emotional because the songs reflect my life’s journey – where I was and where I am now. But it was also exciting because I learnt new things and explored different sounds and techniques,” she said. The EP is intended to uplift listeners, offering messages of hope, renewal, and encouragement. Through her music, Xantel aims to connect with audiences on an emotional level, inspiring positivity and resilience.
Produced by Smashtainment Music, the four-track EP was created through a collaborative and inspiring process that Xantel described as productive and rewarding. The partnership allowed her to refine her sound and bring her creative vision to life while overcoming challenges, including financial constraints that at times slowed the recording process. “The biggest challenge was financial shortages. The project required a lot of money, and at some point, the process had to pause until I managed to gather more funds,” she explained. Despite these obstacles, Xantel successfully completed the EP, demonstrating both determination and artistic focus. The combination of talent, collaboration, and perseverance has set a strong foundation for her future career.
Xantel plans to promote Usizo through live performances, a tour, and radio airplay, while continuing to engage with fans across digital platforms. She emphasized her commitment to growing as an artist and expanding her reach, ensuring that her music resonates both locally and beyond. The successful EP launch and enthusiastic reception signal that Xantel is poised for sustained success in Zimbabwe’s music industry. By blending authentic Afro-soul sounds with relatable storytelling, she has established herself as a rising talent capable of making a lasting impact on audiences and shaping the future of the country’s contemporary music scene.
