Balancing Cleanliness, Family, and Business: A Conversation with Bridget of Shongedza Cleaning Services

In today’s business spotlight, we sit down with Bridget, the inspiring force behind Shongedza Cleaning Services, a company transforming the way Zimbabweans view cleanliness, comfort, and order. More than just a cleaning service, Shongedza is about restoring peace of mind—something Bridget knows all too well as a mother, wife, and businesswoman navigating the daily balance of family and entrepreneurship.
In this candid conversation, Bridget shares how she built her business from the ground up, the challenges of operating in Zimbabwe’s economic climate, and the emotional rewards of creating clean, healthy spaces for families and businesses. With passion, practicality, and purpose, she opens up about everything from post-construction projects to the underestimated power of decluttering—and why trusting yourself is the first step to success.
Bridget, as a mother, wife, and businesswoman, how do you balance the demands of family life with running a professional cleaning service like Shongedza?
To be honest, it’s not always easy, but having a business partner has been a game-changer as we share the workload. My husband is also super supportive; he understands when I have to work late or travel for business. Our helper at home is also a big help, allowing me to focus on the business. I make sure to prioritize my tasks by journaling and listing what needs to be done daily and weekly. This helps me stay organized and on top of things. And, of course, having friends who encourage me and offer advice when needed is a blessing.
What inspired you to start Shongedza Cleaning Services, and how has your personal journey as a Zimbabwean woman shaped your business values?
Throughout my career, I’ve always appreciated the impact a clean and organized space can have on productivity and stress levels. As someone who loves cleaning and takes pride in doing it well, I realized I could offer this service to others who might not have the time or inclination. I wanted to provide a reliable and professional cleaning service that would give busy individuals and professionals peace of mind. Seeing the positive impact on my clients’ lives has been incredibly rewarding.
You offer everything from residential to event and post-construction cleaning. Which of these services is most in demand in Zimbabwe, and why do you think that is?
Post-construction cleaning is definitely our most in-demand service. With Zimbabwe’s ongoing development and construction of new residential spaces, there’s a growing need for professional cleaning services to get these spaces move-in ready. Many of our clients are homeowners who want their new spaces to be spotless and welcoming. We’ve built a team that’s equipped to handle these large-scale cleaning projects, and it’s been a success.
Many Zimbabwean households still rely on informal domestic help. How do you convince clients of the value of professional, structured cleaning services?
While many households in Zimbabwe rely on domestic help, we highlight the value of professional cleaning services in providing deep cleans and using specialized equipment. Our services give homes and offices a fresh, revitalized look that goes beyond daily maintenance. For families with young children, our deep cleaning services are especially beneficial, as helpers might not have the time or expertise to tackle tough cleaning jobs like walls, windows, and ledges. Our services complement the daily work done by domestic helpers, ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment.
The idea of a clean space being the foundation of a stress-free and healthy life is powerful. How have you seen this play out in your clients’ lives or your own?
We’ve seen firsthand how our services can reduce stress and improve health. Our move-in and move-out services, which include packing and unpacking, have been particularly popular. Clients are often relieved and grateful for the convenience and expertise we provide. Professional cleaning also removes allergens, improves breathing, and reduces illnesses. In fact, during the winter season, our sanitizing services have been especially valuable in reducing the spread of colds and flu.
How do economic challenges in Zimbabwe affect your operations and pricing—and how do you stay affordable yet professional for your customers?
Operating a business in Zimbabwe comes with its challenges, particularly when it comes to sourcing equipment and supplies. Since some cleaning equipment isn’t manufactured locally, we have to import it, which affects our pricing. We strive to balance our prices with the quality of service we provide, ensuring that our clients receive value for their money. We’re constantly looking for ways to optimize our operations and reduce costs without compromising on quality.
Shongedza Cleaning also offers interior design and organizing. In your experience, how important is decluttering in helping Zimbabwean families feel more in control and less stressed?
Decluttering is an essential part of our services, and we encourage our clients to donate items they no longer need. Not only does decluttering improve the aesthetic of a home, but it also increases its practicality and functionality. We’ve seen how decluttering can positively impact families, reducing stress and making their lives easier. Our team is trained to work with clients to identify areas that need decluttering and organize their spaces to suit their needs.
What has been your proudest moment so far as a business owner, especially knowing your family sees you in this leadership role?
My proudest moment is simply realizing that my business idea became a reality. Each new client and deal still amazes me, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to build a successful business. As a mother and wife, it’s also fulfilling to see my family proud of what I’ve achieved.
What lessons have you learned about resilience and innovation from running a business in Zimbabwe’s ever-changing environment?
Running a business in Zimbabwe’s ever-changing environment has taught me the importance of resilience and innovation. You have to be adaptable and willing to pivot when circumstances change. Keeping up with trends and using all available marketing options is crucial to staying ahead. I’ve learned to push myself, take calculated risks, and trust my instincts. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it.
10. What advice would you give to other Zimbabwean mothers or wives who are dreaming of starting their own business but don’t know where to begin?
If you’re thinking of starting a business, don’t overthink it! Research your idea, identify a problem to solve, and take action. Don’t be afraid to seek advice and learn from others. Starting small and being willing to adapt is key. Surround yourself with supportive people who believe in you and your vision. Most importantly, trust yourself and your abilities. With hard work and determination, you can build a successful business that brings value to your community.
Bridget’s journey with Shongedza Cleaning Services is proof that meaningful businesses are born not just from market gaps, but from heart, resilience, and a deep understanding of people’s everyday needs. Her story is one of quiet determination—turning a personal love for cleaning into a professional service that brings relief, joy, and sanity to many homes and workplaces across Zimbabwe.
As she continues to grow her business while raising a family, Bridget stands as a role model for Zimbabwean women looking to carve their own path. Her message is clear: you don’t need to have it all figured out to begin—you just need to start, stay focused, and believe in the value you bring.
