Gracious Chiedza Jim: Zimbabwean Nurse Excels in Zambia, Wins National Top Awards

Gracious Chiedza Jim, a 30-year-old from Kwekwe, Zimbabwe, has emerged as one of Zambia’s most outstanding nursing students. She outperformed more than 7,000 peers to be named the national overall best student in registered nursing, earning widespread recognition for her dedication and skill.
Jim’s achievements include top honours in Medical and Surgical Nursing, Leadership, Management and Governance, and the prestigious Board of Directors Award, establishing her as a national sensation. “It really came as a surprise, and I was honored to receive such recognition in a foreign country,” she said.
Her journey into nursing began in 2021 during an IT attachment at Kwekwe General Hospital, where exposure to the hospital environment and inspiration from her two nurse sisters sparked her interest. “Hearing medical personnel speak in their medical language was so intriguing,” she recalled. “I attended meetings with staff and participated in disease surveillance. It was really interesting.”
Jim credits her success to self-motivation, focus, and a proactive approach. “I wasn’t sure about nursing at first, but the training helped me realise it was the right fit,” she said. “The first week focused on life skills, self-awareness, and goal-setting. It helped me focus and improve myself.”
Beauty Siansende Zimba, CEO and Registrar of the Nurses and Midwifery Council of Zambia, praised Jim’s performance, noting that it demonstrates the importance of hard work and commitment in healthcare. “We must be torchbearers of good behaviour and dedication in healthcare. This achievement by Gracious Jim must motivate others to take their lessons seriously,” Zimba said during the award ceremony.
Jim attended Tasungana Primary School, Munyati High School, and Manunure High School before studying IT at Kwekwe Polytechnic and spending two years at Gtel. While IT sparked her initial professional interest, nursing opened new avenues and aligned with her passion for care and data analysis.
Born and raised in Kwekwe, she is the sixth of nine children. Her mother is a farmer, and her father is a retired transportation manager at Kwekwe General Hospital. Jim acknowledges her sisters, both professional nurses, as key inspirations for her career path.
Her story reflects dedication, perseverance, and the transformative potential of healthcare training. Jim’s success is a source of encouragement for aspiring healthcare professionals in Zimbabwe and the region. Her achievements highlight the impact committed healthcare practitioners can have on their communities and serve as a modern example of care and professionalism. Gracious Chiedza Jim’s journey demonstrates that passion, focus, and resilience can turn opportunity into national recognition, inspiring a new generation of nurses to aim for excellence.
