Zimbabwe Launches National Polio Vaccination Campaign: Parents Urged to Protect Children

Parents and caregivers across Zimbabwe are being urged to ensure that children under the age of 10 receive the polio vaccine as part of the national immunization campaign, running from November 26 to 29, 2024. The campaign, spearheaded by the Government, aims to protect the nation’s children from the debilitating effects of polio and to work towards a polio-free future.

Dr. Shadreck Chiduwo, a paediatrician at a local hospital, emphasized the importance of vaccination in preventing polio, a highly contagious disease that can cause irreversible paralysis. “Polio is a preventable disease, and vaccination is key in children’s life cycle. By participating in the vaccination campaign, parents can help protect their children and contribute to a polio-free future,” he said.

Health workers will be stationed at various locations, including schools and community centres, to administer the polio vaccine. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to take their children to the nearest health facility to receive the vaccine, ensuring that no child is left behind.

In addition to the physical vaccination drives, Unicef Zimbabwe is running an online awareness campaign to encourage participation. Through their social media channels, the organization is spreading the message that “Every shot counts for a healthier future,” under the hashtag #EndPolio.

This vaccination drive is a critical step in the nation’s efforts to eradicate polio and safeguard future generations. Parents and caregivers are urged to act swiftly and take advantage of the nationwide campaign to help ensure the well-being of their children and the wider community.
