Azania Jazz Co. Unveils Between Africa’s Rivers, A Journey Through Africa’s Musical Heritage

South African instrumental collective Azania Jazz Co. has revealed its forthcoming concept album, Between Africa’s Rivers, a 14-track Afro-jazz project that pays tribute to the rich legacy of Africa’s indigenous musical instruments.

Designed as an immersive listening experience, the album reimagines traditional African instruments as the principal storytellers within contemporary jazz compositions. Each piece is built around a single instrument, allowing its natural tone, rhythm and character to lead the musical narrative while being supported by subtle jazz arrangements.

The album features compositions named after the instruments themselves, including Djembe, Talking Drum, Dunun, Bougarabou, Ngoma, Ashiko, Udu, Shekere, Agogo, Balafon, Marimba, Krin, Hosho and Seed Pods.

Rather than blending these instruments into the background, Azania Jazz Co. gives each one the space to carry an entire composition.

“Every instrument has its own voice, its own history and its own rhythm,” says the collective. “We wanted to create music that allows listeners to hear those voices without distraction, where jazz simply provides the landscape for each instrument to tell its story.”

Inspired by the rivers that have connected African civilizations for generations, Between Africa’s Rivers combines warm trumpet melodies, expressive saxophone solos, Rhodes piano, upright bass and understated percussion to evoke the feeling of travelling across the continent’s diverse cultural landscapes.

The album’s visual identity reflects the same philosophy. Its artwork features a young child seated quietly at the edge of an African river, gazing across the water as the sun sets. The image represents curiosity, heritage and the quiet passing of musical knowledge from one generation to the next.

Instead of focusing on performance, the artwork encourages reflection, inviting audiences to experience the music as a journey through memory, place and tradition.
