Breaking news Prisca Mupfumira granted bail.
Former minister of Tourism and hospitality Prisca Mupfumira must be on cloud nine after the high court’s decision to finally grant her bail. After being denied bail at the lower courts, Mupfumira had approached the high court for relief and her appeal was dismissed by Justice Ndewere a few weeks ago. After lodging another application, through Advocate Thabani Mpofu under the instructions of her lawyers Chinyama and patners, bail was granted.
Justice Any Tsanga took into consideration the concessions made by the state represented by S Fero that indeed the magistrate at the lower court had not properly exercised his mind in denying her bail. The reason for refusal was that she was a flight risk,since she had two passports, an ordinary one and a diplomatic passport with a ten year UK Visa. Advocate Thabani Mpofu said it could be cured by having the former minister surrender the said passports to the clerk of courts.
The state also conceded that at the point in time, it was safe to release the former minister because investigations were complete hence she would not interfere. Justice Tsanga ruled in her favour and granted bail subject to the conditions that she should deposit rtgs five thousand dollars with the clerk of, that she surrenders title deeds to her My pleasant house, that she continues residing at her given address, that she does not interfere with state witnesses, that she surrender both her passports and any other travel documents as well as to report twice a week at Avondale police station.
Prisca Mupfumira is facing nine counts if criminal abuse of office and is alleged to have swindled NSSA US 95 million dollars. Her trial is set to commence this October.
