Selmor Mtukudzi Returns with Ninth Studio Album “Ndinenyara”

Afro-jazz singer Selmor Mtukudzi has returned with her ninth studio album, ‘‘Ndinenyara’’, a deeply personal project that reflects her life experiences and artistic growth.

In an interview with Zimpapers Entertainment Hub, Selmor described the album as “a reflection of my life. I’m sharing my story with the world, things I have experienced and things I have seen. It’s personal, real and emotional.”

‘‘Ndinenyara’’, meaning “I’m shy” or “I’m humbled” in Shona, features nine tracks exploring different perspectives and life experiences. The tracklist includes ‘‘Ndinenyara’’, ‘‘Mwana Mwana’’, ‘‘Washinga Here?’’, ‘‘Chii Kuonda’’, ‘‘Sezvinononoka’’, ‘‘Wadya Kupi’’ featuring Pauline, ‘‘Kugara Naamainini’’ and ‘‘Hatimire Kufara’’.

The album blends Afro-jazz, traditional rhythms, and modern influences. Selmor’s vocal delivery combines emotion and technical precision, creating a timeless sound. While rooted in the legacy of her late father, Oliver Mtukudzi, the album asserts Selmor’s unique musical identity.

Family played a key role in the production. Her husband, Tendai Manatsa, and their son, Ben, produced most of the tracks at home. “It felt good to create something meaningful with my loved ones. It made the process more natural and honest,” Selmor said.

Selmor described ‘‘Ndinenyara’’ as a turning point in her career, emphasizing vulnerability and growth. “I’ve grown through each project, but ‘Ndinenyara’ allowed me to be truly vulnerable. I hope people can feel that in the music,” she explained.

The album also addresses social themes. Tracks like ‘‘Chii Kuonda?’’ and ‘‘Haunzwe Nei?’’ explore body image and emotional numbness, while ‘‘Washinga Here?’’ promotes resilience and self-belief. ‘‘Sezvinononoka’’ highlights patience and faith during life challenges.

The collaboration with musician Pauline on ‘‘Wadya Kupi?’’ showcases Selmor’s commitment to working with artists she has long-standing relationships with. “They are people I have a relationship with in the industry. We’ve worked together on other projects and they are always willing to support me,” she said.

As ‘‘Ndinenyara’’ circulates on digital platforms and radio, fans can anticipate live performances and visuals for key tracks. Selmor continues to strengthen her position as one of Zimbabwe’s leading female voices, proving herself as a storyteller and artist beyond her family legacy.

Each of her albums carries a unique identity, but ‘‘Ndinenyara’’ stands out for its intimacy and honesty. “This one is special because it’s close to my heart and captures so many intimate truths,” Selmor noted.
