Job Sikhala lands himself in hot soup.
MDC Alliance deputy national spokesperson Job Sikhala has just ruffled some top feathers with the pronouncements that he made at a rally in Bikita over the weekend. Sikhala, who is a lawyer by nature, said,” We area committed leadership that will give ZANU Pf headaches and (Amos) Chibaya was not lying or joking about the war and fight we are about to take to the doorstep of Emmerson Munangagwa. We are going to overthrow him before 2023, that is not a joke”.
The statement was taken to be treasonous. Sikhala has since been arrested and charged under Section 22(2) of the Criminal law Codification and Reform Act for trying to subvert a constitutionally elected government. He was Sadi to be in the process of assisting the police with investigations yesterday.
Sikhala is set to appear in court today. The MDC Alliance has distanced itself from his statement. In an official statement they said that the views expressed by Sikhala at the rally were his own personal opinions but had probably been misconstrued and misinterpreted.
Members of the opposition party have been arrested on such allegations on several occasions in the past. Even the founder of MDC, Morgan Tsvangirai once bore the brunt of having to prove that he was not guilty after being arrested on treason charges during the Mugabe era. He was later on acquitted.
