Minister Dr. Apollonia Munzverengwi Leads March Against GBV in Goromonzi
In a powerful demonstration of Zimbabwe’s commitment to ending gender-based violence (GBV), Mashonaland East Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister, Dr. Apollonia Munzverengwi, led a march in Goromonzi today as part of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.
Dressed in a striking blue dress, Dr. Munzverengwi joined the provincial community in raising awareness and advocating for the eradication of GBV, emphasizing the Government’s continued commitment to the fight. The event was held under this year’s theme: “Towards 30 years of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action: UNITE to End Violence Against Women and Girls.”
Speaking to the crowd, Dr. Munzverengwi highlighted the significant strides Zimbabwe has made since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration, noting the country’s progressive laws aimed at protecting women and girls. She pointed to the Constitution of Zimbabwe, which guarantees the protection of human rights, including the prevention of violence against women and girls.
Among the key legal provisions mentioned were the Domestic Violence Act of 2007, which protects individuals from domestic abuse, and the Marriages Act of 2022, which sets the minimum marriage age at 18. She also underscored the commitment of the Second Republic, led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, in launching the High-Level Political Compact (HLPC) on Ending GBV and Harmful Practices (2021-2030), demonstrating political will to tackle the issue.
Dr. Munzverengwi also urged citizens to take collective responsibility in combating GBV, emphasizing that the Government is actively working to make GBV prevention and response services accessible to all.
The march and speech were a clear call to action, encouraging everyone to join the fight to create a society free from gender-based violence. Dr. Munzverengwi’s leadership in this cause continues to inspire efforts across the province and the nation as Zimbabwe strives to build a safer and more inclusive society for all.
