Minister July Moyo fails to settle electricity bill.
Minister of Local government July Moyo was recently slapped with an order to pay outstanding electricity bills to ZETDC. Judge Mary Dube sitting at High court Harare ordered the minister to pay over 300 000.00 towards settling his bill with the power utility company. It is alleged that Moyo had been receiving electricity to his Mavaesera farm in Kwekwe. He has an outstanding balance of 300 000.00 as at May 2019.
The two parties presented a deed of settlement which will see Moyo paying a monthly sum until the debt is paid in full. The country is currently facing an acute shortage of energy supply and it is such people who were benefitting without paying their bills that have contributed to the problem.
The country has a huge debt to its power suppliers Eskom. Electricity has now become a very special item with most households only receiving it during the night. There have been 18 hour power cuts in the country, hindering industrial progress and causing suffering to many people.
The situation is so dire that at rural hospitals, patients have to come with their own source of light should they need assistance at night. This is particularly hard for women in labour as they have to deliver tor babies in the dark. ZETDC has been on a witch hunt and taking defaulters to court to claim outstanding balances.
