President Mnangagwa Arrives in Moscow for Russia’s 80th Victory Day Celebrations

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has arrived in Moscow, Russia, to participate in the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, commemorating the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany during World War II. Touching down at Vnukovo International Airport at approximately 12:30 PM local time (11:30 AM Zimbabwe time), the Zimbabwean leader was warmly received by Mikhail Bogdanov, Russia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Africa and the Middle East, as well as Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Russia, Mark Grey Marongwe.
President Mnangagwa is accompanied by key Cabinet ministers, including Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Professor Amon Murwira and Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube, alongside other senior government officials. The visit highlights Zimbabwe’s enduring diplomatic and economic ties with Russia, as the two nations continue to deepen their cooperation across multiple sectors.
Zimbabwe Among 29 Nations Represented at Major Global Event
The Victory Day celebrations on May 9 are expected to bring together an estimated 29 Heads of State from around the world, making it one of the largest diplomatic gatherings of the year. According to the Kremlin, leaders from countries including China, Brazil, Egypt, Vietnam, Venezuela, Belarus, Ethiopia, and Serbia are among those confirmed to attend. The presence of leaders from both developed and developing nations underscores the global significance of the historic event.
In addition to the Heads of State, defence ministers from 31 countries and military personnel from 13 nations will participate in the Moscow parade. Among the marching contingents are troops from Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, Egypt, Laos, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Vietnam, showcasing a powerful display of international solidarity and military tradition.
Strengthening Zimbabwe-Russia Bilateral Ties
President Mnangagwa’s visit also serves as a strategic opportunity to reaffirm Zimbabwe’s robust partnership with Russia. The two nations enjoy strong political and economic relations that have yielded tangible benefits for Zimbabweans in recent years.
Several Russian investments have played a crucial role in boosting key sectors of Zimbabwe’s economy. Notable examples include the Alrosa diamond mining project and the deployment of air ambulances in public hospitals, which have enhanced emergency medical services nationwide. Another milestone is Zimbabwe’s second space satellite, developed in partnership with Russian scientists, symbolising growing collaboration in science and technology.
In the agricultural sector, Russian firm Ecorost is actively supplying fertiliser to Zimbabwe, contributing to food security and supporting farming operations. Meanwhile, a steady flow of Russian investments continues to target strategic sectors such as energy, mining, and scientific research, further bolstering economic growth.
Educational and Humanitarian Support from Russia
Russia has also extended support through educational and humanitarian aid. Hundreds of Zimbabwean students are currently pursuing studies in Russian universities on scholarships sponsored by both governments. This initiative is helping to build a highly skilled workforce that will contribute to Zimbabwe’s long-term development goals.
In 2024, Russia demonstrated solidarity with Zimbabwe by donating 50,000 tonnes of grain and 26,000 tonnes of fertiliser, aiding the country during a severe drought caused by the El Niño weather phenomenon. These generous contributions have had a direct impact on food availability and agricultural productivity in rural communities.
Looking Ahead: Diplomatic Engagement in Moscow
As President Mnangagwa joins other world leaders in Moscow for the Victory Day commemorations, his presence underscores Zimbabwe’s commitment to global diplomacy and international cooperation. The event not only celebrates a pivotal moment in world history but also provides a high-level platform for engaging with allies and potential partners.
With continued collaboration and investment, Zimbabwe’s partnership with Russia is poised to bring further economic and developmental gains in the years ahead. As the celebrations unfold, all eyes will be on the diplomatic and strategic outcomes of President Mnangagwa’s participation in this landmark international event.
