Veterinary Doctor Urges Farmers to Breed Boer Goats for Profit

Veterinarian Dr. David Sibanda has encouraged farmers to consider breeding Boer goats, highlighting that these animals are relatively easy to rear and can generate significant income if properly cared for.

Speaking to a journalist, Dr. Sibanda said Boer goats can be highly profitable, but farmers must make the necessary preparations before starting. He emphasised the importance of proper kraal construction as a critical element in the successful rearing of goats.

“Your kraal must be built on higher ground to prevent water from collecting when it rains. Mud creates conditions that can cause hoof diseases in these goats,” explained Dr. Sibanda. “The shelter should also be roofed to prevent rain from getting in and must be protected from wind, as young kids can die from cold exposure.”

He added that proper feeding is essential for goats to grow healthy and reach optimal weight. The goats should have access to sufficient pasture, leaves, or purchased feed that contains the right nutrients. Clean water is also vital to prevent diseases such as diarrhea, which can result from drinking contaminated water.

Dr. Sibanda advised that those interested in breeding Boer goats should first ensure all necessary preparations are in place.

“Don’t buy the goats before you’ve built a proper kraal, secured clean water, and identified good grazing areas. Once everything is ready, then you can start bringing in your goats.”

He also recommended that farmers begin with two or three local goats that are already familiar with the area. This helps the newly introduced Boer goats to adapt more easily by socialising with the local goats.

Boer goats are known for their fast growth, high meat production, and resilience to diseases when managed correctly. Dr. Sibanda stressed that preparation, proper care, and a good understanding of livestock are key to succeeding in Boer goat farming.
