Zim commemorates international day of elimination of violence against women.
25 November marks the International day for elimination of violence against women. A reflection of this day clearly shows the impact of gender based violence in the modern society. Cases of rape, assault,murder and child marriages have been on the increase.
These issues affecting women have been rampant in the country. We highlight some of the reported incidents of violence against women if 2019.
Early this year, a Johanne Masowe elderly congregant was reported to have married a 15 year old female congregant. The news caused an outpour of rage and people castigated the church practice of marrying girls at such a tender age.
A woman from Norton was recently battered and left for dead by her husband for refusing to move out of their matrimonial home so that the husband could accommodate his girlfriend. The woman was thoroughly beaten and sustained head injuries. She stated that her husband, who is a prominent businessman, was in the habit of assaulting her and this had persisted for over 16 years. Most women organizations and celebrities spoke out against such violations.
Cases of raoe have also bwen reported with that of juveniles beibg ob the increase. Society really needs to tackle such issues head on and participate in eliminating violence against women.
