ZRP Advances Smart Policing as 27 Officers Graduate as Certified Drone Pilots

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has made a bold stride in modernising its law enforcement approach with the graduation of 27 officers as certified drone pilots. The officers were honoured at a ceremony held this afternoon at the ZRP Sports Club, marking a new era in the integration of technology into policing operations.
This milestone is part of a wider modernisation agenda championed by the Commissioner-General of Police, aimed at enhancing crime prevention, public safety, and operational efficiency through advanced technology. The drone pilot training programme is expected to boost surveillance capabilities, support traffic management, and provide real-time intelligence for critical operations.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, ZRP leadership emphasised that the drone programme aligns with the broader rollout of the Electronic Traffic Management System (ETMS), a tech-driven initiative currently being implemented nationwide to improve road safety, monitor traffic violations, and ease congestion.
“The graduation of these officers as certified drone pilots is a significant step towards embracing smart policing. This training equips our personnel with the skills necessary to operate modern surveillance tools, making our operations more effective and responsive,” said a ZRP spokesperson.
The integration of drones into policing marks a shift towards data-driven decision-making in law enforcement. The drones will be deployed in various operational scenarios including border patrol, crowd monitoring, search and rescue missions, and crime scene analysis.
By adopting aerial technology, ZRP aims to reduce response times, increase officer safety, and enhance visibility in hard-to-reach areas. The initiative also strengthens efforts to curb illegal activities such as smuggling, illegal mining, and environmental crimes.
The ZRP has pledged to continue investing in training and modern tools that support its mandate to protect and serve. More officers are expected to undergo drone training in the near future as the police force accelerates its tech adoption strategy.
As Zimbabwe continues to adapt to emerging security challenges, the integration of drone technology into policing not only symbolises progress but also positions the ZRP as a forward-looking institution ready to meet the demands of modern-day law enforcement.
