Baba Harare Returns to Jiti After Gospel Music Stint

Last year, Baba Harare surprised fans and the Zimbabwean showbiz scene when he announced he had become a born-again Christian and was switching to gospel music. He openly criticised jiti, calling it “nonsense,” and committed fully to his new spiritual path.
The musician’s recent announcement signals his return to jiti, with hints of an upcoming collaboration with Gemma Griffiths. In a post to fans, he wrote, “Ndadzoka kuzoti vaya vanga vasati vatanga kunwa mapiritsi vachitangawo,” accompanied by laughing emojis, signaling a playful comeback.
Baba Harare’s shift back to jiti follows a period of reflection he experienced while in Australia. Speaking about his decision to switch to gospel music, he said, “Early this year we travelled to Australia with my group where I had a sold-out show. The fans embraced my music, but God spoke to me and convinced me to quit secular music and serve Him. I know I will miss travelling and stuff but I do not regret this move. This is the wisest move I have made in my life.”
The transition was not without challenges. Baba Harare admitted that convincing long-time fans to accept his gospel journey was difficult. “It will be hard for some of the people who have been loyal to me to embrace my new move. I quit jiti for gospel music which has left many people debating. I have also lost some of my fans in the process and gained new ones after my bold decision to give my life to Christ,” he explained.
He also addressed rumours surrounding his personal life, clarifying that he had been married for some time but chose to keep his wife out of the public eye. “I have heard people say I recently got married, which is false. I have been married to her for some time, but I did not want her to be in the media. Social media went into an overdrive when her images were publicised with many versions coming up,” he said.
Baba Harare’s return to jiti is expected to reignite interest in the genre while showing his versatility as an artist who can navigate both gospel and secular music. Fans are now watching closely to see how his comeback unfolds and whether his collaboration with Gemma Griffiths will mark a new chapter in his career.
