Zim exits AFCON on a high

By Geronimo News

Zimbabwe ended their fifth Africa Cup of Nations dance on a high note after stunning Guinea 2-1 in their final Group B game at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo on Tuesday.

Skipper Knowledge Musona opened the scoring for the Warriors in the 26th minute when he nodded home a Never Tigere cross from the right to give his side the lead before SuperSport United winger Kuda Mahachi added another one for Zimbabwe with two minutes to go to the breather.

With Guinea probing in search for goals, captain Naby Keïta rose to the ocassion and pulled one back for the Syli National in the 49th minute but that what not enough to stop the Warriors from earning their first set of three points at the tournament since the 2006 AFCON finals to bow out respectably.

Had Zimbabwe started the campaign in such a way perhaps now it would have been a different story but alas Norman Mapeza’s charges will live to rue the opportunities they missed in their games against Senegal and Malawi respectively.

Given the nature of their group, football enthusiasts and Zimbabweans at large had high hopes that the Warriors would surpass their previous performances at the four editions of the tournament and progress to the next round for the first time but that remained a pipe dream.

Now that the 33rd edition of the AFCON finals is over for Zimbabwe focus will now shift to building a formidable side which will compete for top spots in the coming competitions.
