The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe has officially welcomed the launch of the Shekinah Gospel Awards in Avondale, Harare, marking a significant milestone for the country’s gospel music sector. This new platform aims to recognize and celebrate the achievements of gospel artists who inspire communities through their music. The launch reflects the growing importance of the arts in Zimbabwean society and highlights gospel music as a key contributor to cultural identity and social cohesion. By creating a structured awards platform, the initiative offers both recognition and motivation for artists to continue producing high-quality, impactful work. It also signals a renewed focus on elevating the local entertainment industry through organized and professional frameworks.
The launch event was graced by the presence of the Guest of Honour, Hon. Lt-Gen (Rtd) Ambassador A.N. Sanyatwe, who was represented by the Deputy Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Hon. NACZ CEO Mr Napoleon Nyanhi offered remarks applauding the leadership behind the awards, particularly CEO and veteran producer McDonald Chidavaenzi, for establishing a platform that addresses a critical gap in the gospel music industry. He expressed gratitude to the government for supporting the launch, emphasizing that public-private collaboration is key to sustaining and growing Zimbabwe’s creative sectors. Mr Nyanhi also highlighted the pioneering role that gospel artists have played in setting professional and creative standards within the local entertainment industry. Their consistent excellence has helped elevate the profile of Zimbabwean music both domestically and internationally, making platforms like the Shekinah Gospel Awards a natural progression for the sector.
The awards are expected to generate new opportunities for emerging and established artists alike. By recognizing talent and achievement, the platform encourages higher standards in music production, performance, and community engagement. It also fosters healthy competition and innovation, motivating artists to expand their creative horizons. Additionally, the awards provide a forum for networking, mentorship, and collaboration, linking artists with producers, media outlets, and other key stakeholders in the entertainment industry. Over time, this ecosystem will contribute to professional growth, sustainability, and the global recognition of Zimbabwean gospel music.
