Talented Zimbabwean Singer and Instrumentalist Jimmy Makureya Dies Aged 69

Renowned Zimbabwean singer and instrumentalist Jimmy Makureya has passed away at the age of 69. His younger brother, Joseph Makureya, confirmed that Jimmy succumbed to complications from high blood pressure and diabetes on September 8.

Joseph revealed that Jimmy’s condition deteriorated rapidly. “His BP and sugar levels shot up and by the time a car was found to rush him to hospital, it was late,” he said. “He died while waiting to be served at the hospital.”

Jimmy Makureya was celebrated for his contributions to Zimbabwean music. In his prime, he performed with prominent bands such as Ekhaya, Uthando, and the Runn Family. He also played bass guitar for Thomas Mapfumo, the Zig Zag Band, and contributed to Susan Mapfumo’s song Handitabwe Iyoyo.

Beyond performing, Jimmy was a mentor to his family, guiding siblings including Joseph, who became a respected bass guitarist with the Assegai Crew. Jimmy shared his musical skills widely, leaving a lasting influence on Zimbabwean music.

He is survived by his wife, Maybe, and five children: Epiphania, Jimmy, Nomsa, Sibongile, and Melody, all of whom have their own families.

Mourners are gathering at 15 Mutangadura Old Location, Sakubva in Mutare. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

Jimmy Makureya’s legacy as a gifted singer and instrumentalist will be remembered by fans, fellow musicians, and his family.
