Bulawayo Children’s Choir Sets Sights on Bigger Stages Following PRACA Win

Fresh off their triumph at the prestigious Pumula Royal Arts and Community Awards (PRACA), the Bulawayo Children’s Choir is proving that success is a starting point, not a destination. Just weeks after earning the coveted “Best Duo/Group” award – their first PRACA accolade – the young ensemble is already back in rehearsal, preparing for an ambitious year ahead.
The choir’s first rehearsal of 2026 is scheduled for Saturday, January 24, signalling a swift return to the dedication and discipline that earned them recognition. Creative Director Trevor Mawaka described the PRACA victory as a springboard for future growth.
“Winning at PRACA was a tremendous honour and a validation of our children’s incredible talent and commitment, but we see this as just the beginning. Our focus is firmly on the future, pushing our boundaries, and reaching even greater heights in 2026,” Mawaka stated.
The choir is also actively inviting new members, offering a platform for children with a passion for singing to develop their vocal skills, form lasting friendships, and experience the joy of making music together. Mawaka encouraged interested children to join: “If any child loves singing, this is a fantastic chance for them to grow their vocal skills in a supportive environment. We welcome new voices to join our journey.”
Looking ahead, the Bulawayo Children’s Choir has several exciting projects planned. Among them is the reshoot of the Dance Away My Sorrows video, which will see the choir collaborate with Creative Culture, a group of talented child dancers, to produce a vibrant and dynamic visual representation of the popular track.
In addition, the choir aims to elevate its live performance experience and build collaborations with Harare-based artistes. These initiatives are designed to extend the choir’s reach nationally, allowing them to impact a wider audience beyond Bulawayo.
Mawaka highlighted the importance of dedication from both current and prospective members. “Regular attendance at rehearsals is absolutely vital. It’s through consistent practice and teamwork that we maintain our standards, learn new material, and prepare for these exciting projects and performances,” he said.
The Bulawayo Children’s Choir’s message is clear: the applause from their PRACA win has faded, replaced by the rhythm of hard work, preparation, and ambitious planning. Their focus for 2026 is on bigger stages, new collaborations, and welcoming fresh talent into their growing musical family.
This commitment positions the choir as a rising force in Zimbabwe’s youth music scene, demonstrating that recognition is best followed by continued excellence and innovation.
