Chiedza Rwodzi Wins Intercultural Connections Award for Strangers and Revelations at Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Globally-acclaimed film actor and producer Chiedza Rwodzi has received an Intercultural Connections (IC) Award for her debut stage feature play, Strangers and Revelations, which is running at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The festival takes place from August 1 to 23 at the Community Church Edinburgh, King’s Hall, Newington, UK.

Rwodzi, noted for her highly realistic performances, was honoured last Saturday for her contribution to theatre through the Intercultural Connections Initiative in Edinburgh. Winnie Wen, director of IC Awards, said the accolade recognises and celebrates international artists across four categories: Personal Achievement Award, Full Production Award, Pioneer Award, and Future Generation Award. She added that the award provides access to international theatre opportunities, professional networking, and expanded market reach.

Strangers and Revelations explores the complexities of human relationships through an African lens. The play follows Zodwa and Malcolm, two Zimbabweans in London, who meet for a first date under unusual circumstances. Their conversations uncover shared cultural experiences and deeper truths about themselves, while touching on mythology, trauma, and power dynamics.

Rwodzi told NewsDay Life & Style that receiving the award is deeply meaningful. She said, “Being among such a strong pool of nominees is affirming. It is an honour to represent my country on an international stage. This award feels like a milestone in my journey as a storyteller and co-founder of Unshaded Arts, where our mission is to champion universal stories driven by marginalised voices.”

She praised co-directors Matthew Kissa and Hassan Gova and fellow actor Dwight Mlambo for their contribution to the play. Rwodzi emphasized the power of theatre to challenge, heal, advocate, and connect people globally, noting that Strangers and Revelations was born from a desire to explore complex experiences like faith, trauma, and belonging.

The play has received critical acclaim. Ellen Leslie, a correspondent for the UK’s Independent newspaper, gave it a five-star review, describing it as “a bold and powerful play shining a much-needed light on power imbalances between African men and women. It evokes shock, sadness, anger, and everything in between, leaving the audience reeling once the lights go out.”

Strangers and Revelations cements Chiedza Rwodzi’s reputation as a transformative storyteller, highlighting the global relevance of Zimbabwean theatre and the strength of stories driven by authenticity and courage.
