Dorcas Moyo Responds to Social Media Criticism, Receives Generous Gift from Wicknell Chivayo

Gospel music star Dorcas Moyo has stated that she does not want to engage in back-and-forth exchanges on social media after receiving intense criticism for a recent comment. Moyo had posted “Ranganai Zvenyu asi Zvichakona” on 31 March, the day of a planned national protest, which translates to “Plan all you want, but it shall fail.” This post drew ire from many Zimbabweans, who perceived it as a negative or prophetic statement, accusing her of spreading doom.
In a recent interview with The Herald, Moyo reflected on the emotional toll social media criticisms can have. She admitted that at times, it can be challenging to deal with online negativity. “Honestly speaking, it’s not easy. At times, it really takes its toll on oneself. I have learned not to engage in social media battles and have opted for quiet diplomacy,” she said, emphasizing her desire to stay above the fray.
Despite the backlash, Moyo’s resilience was rewarded when businessman Wicknell Chivayo, known for his controversial reputation, gifted her a brand-new 2025 Toyota Fortuner and US$20,000. The gift was presented as a gesture of appreciation for her contributions to Zimbabwe’s gospel music scene. Chivayo posted a message congratulating Moyo, saying, “In recognition of your exceptional TALENT and contributions in the GOSPEL music industry, I want to say a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to DORCAS MOYO.” He also mentioned that the vehicle and cash were meant to help her “spoil yourself at the salon” and ease the stress caused by the social media backlash.
Moyo expressed her gratitude for the generous gift, calling it a rare and thoughtful act. “It would be wizardry at its pinnacle should one fail to appreciate such a rare deed of generosity. I’m extra excited to receive such a huge token from Sir Wicknell, and I pray that God continues blessing him,” she shared, clearly appreciative of the gesture.
However, the gift sparked further debate and criticism among Zimbabweans. Many questioned the priorities of such acts of generosity, especially in light of the country’s deteriorating public services. “Why are Zimbabweans ululating for a corruption-rigged country that is deteriorating daily… next to zero service delivery when the available resources are being used without regard for priorities?” wrote Shaibu Amana on social media. Others criticized Chivayo for focusing his charity on the rich and influential, rather than addressing the needs of the country’s most vulnerable.
Despite the mixed reactions, Moyo remains focused on her music and her faith, choosing to rise above the negativity and continue her work in the gospel music industry. Whether one agrees with her stance on social media or not, her ability to remain grounded in the face of controversy is a testament to her strength as an artist and individual.
