Freddie Gwala Strengthens Zimbabwean Ties with New Single “Great Zimbabwe”

South African Afro-Disco legend Freddie Gwala, popularly known as Madamara, has deepened his connection with Zimbabwe through the release of his new single, “Great Zimbabwe.” The track, released on Friday, was co-produced by Gwala alongside Nkosikhona Ngwabi, with keys by Best “Sweetfingers” Masuku and production contributions from Lucky “Malackcean” Gwayi.

The song features veteran broadcaster Ezra “Tshisa” Sibanda and backing vocals from Sie Letwin Moyo and Loveness Moyo, adding to its appeal for Zimbabwean audiences. Speaking from Johannesburg, Gwala described “Great Zimbabwe” as a celebration of the country’s natural beauty and the warmth of its people.

“From all the places I’ve been to, Zimbabwe has shown me immense love and appreciation. Every time I’m there, I feel at home because my Zimbabwean fans have always supported my craft. Because of the fruitful relationship I have with my fans there, it would have been selfish not to pen a song for the people who love me unconditionally,” Gwala said.

Recorded by Nkosikhona Ngwabi and Wiseman Ndlovu at TM Records, the single highlights Zimbabwe as a whole rather than focusing on a specific city. Gwala explained that the song is inspired by the support he has received and serves as a tribute to the country’s landscapes and culture.

Gwala has long been regarded as an “adopted citizen” of Zimbabwe. He credits the country with embracing his sound, along with groups like Pure Gold and Platform One. His connection to Bulawayo was cemented with the creation of “Tshilamoya,” a fan-favorite anthem for Highlanders FC, Zimbabwe’s oldest football club. The song remains a key part of the Bosso community’s culture.

With Highlanders preparing to celebrate their centenary next year, Gwala extended his wishes to the club. “During the early days of my career, friends — particularly Ezra Tshisa — introduced me to Highlanders. I fell in love with the team after realising how passionate my fans were about Bosso. That prompted me to join as a fan, and I don’t regret it because Highlanders is a huge team,” he said. He added that he is working on a song to honour the club’s 100-year milestone and is open to performing if the celebrations involve live performances.

Gwala will be in Zimbabwe from December 19 to 25 for a series of performances and plans to shoot a music video for “Great Zimbabwe” during his visit. The release reinforces his enduring bond with Zimbabwe and underscores his ongoing commitment to celebrating the country’s culture and fans through music.
