Hope Masike Highlights the Prestige of Nama23 Nominations

Renowned mbira maestro and National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) board member Hope Masike has emphasized the significance of being nominated for the National Arts Merit Awards (Nama). According to Masike, who also serves as the chairperson of the Nama adjudication committee, the awards serve as a gateway to global recognition and career advancement for Zimbabwean creatives.

Masike made these remarks while unveiling the Nama23 nominees, highlighting the impressive turnout of 1,266 entries across various categories. She noted that competition was stiff, reflecting the increasing quality and diversity of submissions. However, she pointed out areas needing improvement, particularly in video and picture shooting, as well as the presentation formats of artistic works.

Nama23 Nominees Unveiled

The nomination announcement, co-hosted by Masike and Angeline Furusa, was a vibrant affair, with both presenters donning striking African attire to complement the event’s #Afrofuturism theme. The atmosphere reflected the celebration of African culture while embracing futuristic creative expression.

This year’s most competitive category, the Literary Category, received 277 entries, followed closely by the Film and Television Category with 267 submissions. Notable nominees included:

  • Outstanding Male Musician: Mark Ngwazi and Baba Harare (Braveman Chizvino Mawanza)
  • Outstanding Female Musician: Feli Nandi, Dorcas Moyo, and Sandra Ndebele
  • Outstanding Female Dancer: Praise Dube and Ndomupeishe Chipendo
  • Visual Arts Category: Bernard Sakarombe and Taurai Chinofura

The event also introduced exciting new categories, including Outstanding Theatre Playwright and Outstanding Newcomer in Visual Arts, signaling a broader recognition of emerging talents.

Industry Experts Applaud the Selection Process

Pauline Mangweni-Furusa, Nama23 presenter and voice-over artist, expressed enthusiasm about the theme, noting its emphasis on pushing Zimbabwean creatives to reimagine their artistic futures. She revealed that the adjudication process remains independent and confidential, ensuring that nominees are selected based on merit.

Film producer Marc Mandishora acknowledged the fairness of the nominations, stating that they reflect the hard work and dedication of artists across multiple disciplines. Similarly, Richard Tentone, founder of the Cinema Society of Zimbabwe, commended Nama’s efforts in fostering inclusivity by recognizing both emerging and veteran talents.
