Julian King Returns to Zimbabwe as a Superstar After Six Years Abroad

US-based Afro-pop singer Julian King has described his return to Zimbabwe as a life-changing experience, saying he left the country as an unknown artist and returned a celebrated star. The versatile performer, born Julian Lennon Kanombirira, made his first trip home in six years to perform at the 2025 Kadoma Music Festival, where he received an enthusiastic welcome from fans.
Speaking about his homecoming, King said the love and warmth he received from Zimbabweans surpassed his expectations. “To be honest with you, I left Zimbabwe as an unknown artist, and I am back home as a superstar,” he said. “The warm reception I got from the day I landed at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport to this day has been exceptional. Meeting my mother, fans, and relatives was something I have been yearning for over the years. I am glad that I am here, and I am really enjoying my brief stay.”
The “One by One” hitmaker performed for the first time on a Zimbabwean stage during the Kadoma Music Festival. He described the experience as both humbling and exhilarating. “The Kadoma show was my first public performance in Zimbabwe. I had never performed anywhere before, and that opportunity meant a lot to me,” he said. “As far as stage fright is concerned, I was never afraid because it’s my job. It was a marvel performing before big names, and to me, I felt no pressure but to simply utilise my slot.”
King said the overwhelming response from fans affirmed his belief that Zimbabweans are ready to support their own talent. “I am always ready to perform on such big occasions, and I am glad that I did my best last weekend. The feedback is overwhelming, and I am proud to be embraced by my kith and kin. I have always been proud to be Zimbabwean, and I will continue to make my country proud,” he said.
The singer revealed that he is planning studio collaborations with several local musicians before returning to the United States. “I have been speaking to a number of artists, including Kae Chaps, Master H, and Feli Nandi, to see if we can create something before my return to the US. I am still around for a week or so, but I will do something before I leave,” he said.
Known for hits like One By One, Ndiri MuZimba, and Handiuye, Julian King attributes his success to hard work and consistency. “I have been away for some time now, but I have never lost track of my roots. I remain loyal to what I do in my career, and I will continue doing so for the good of my career. I might be based in the US, but that does not change the fact that I am Zimbabwean,” he said.
An Accounting Honors Degree holder from Africa University, King has established himself as more than just a singer. He is also a songwriter, dancer, and actor who has built a reputation for versatility. His official biography describes him as “a dynamic and multitalented Afro-pop artist whose music blends influences from Afropop, Afrobeats, and Dancehall.”
Beyond music, King has also dedicated himself to community work. He currently sponsors the education of ten learners from Chitungwiza, a gesture he says reflects his commitment to giving back.
Julian King’s return to Zimbabwe marks both a personal and professional milestone. From an aspiring artist leaving home to a globally recognized performer returning to celebrate his roots, his journey reflects determination, humility, and a strong connection to the people who shaped him.
