Just Leo Releases New Afro-Fusion Project ‘Sanabwelela’

Zimbabwean Afro-fusion artist Just Leo has released her new project, ‘Sanabwelela,’ on 15 January. The body of work explores love, loss, and the silent battles many face away from public view.

The title, ‘Sanabwelela,’ translates to “they never came back” and uses war imagery to convey emotional and mental struggles. Themes include depression, emotional neglect, gender-based violence, and the pressure to survive without support. The project reflects on people who disappear emotionally long before they physically leave.

Musically, ‘Sanabwelela’ blends Afro-fusion rhythms with heartfelt storytelling. Just Leo creates space for reflection, empathy, and honest conversation. The project serves as both a lament and a call for awareness, encouraging listeners to check in on each other and acknowledge grief without shame. It is available on all major digital streaming platforms.

Raised in Victoria Falls, Just Leo grounds her artistry in culture, community, and consciousness. She preserves Zimbabwe’s linguistic heritage through multilingual music, incorporating Nyanja/Chichewa, Tonga, Nambya, and other regional languages. Her work celebrates these languages while keeping them alive for future generations.

Just Leo’s music confronts mental health struggles, depression, suicidal thoughts, gender-based violence, and substance abuse. She creates a safe space for listeners, offering comfort to those in pain and courage to those seeking change.

Her sound merges Afro-fusion, traditional African rhythms, live instrumentation, and modern production. Together with the Simuniziva Band, she honours elders while amplifying youth voices. Each track reaffirms that healing is possible, heritage is powerful, and no voice or language is too small to matter.

‘Sanabwelela’ positions Just Leo not only as a musician but as a cultural storyteller. She documents pain, amplifies hope, and nurtures a new generation of African storytellers.
