Keith Zenda Uses Art to Honour Zimbabwe’s Heritage and National Heroes

Visual artist Keith Zenda, widely known as KZ, says his work celebrates Zimbabwe’s cultural heritage and traditional practices. He describes his art as a tribute to the heroes who shaped the nation and a reflection of its history, culture, and values. Through symbols, motifs, and imagery, Zenda engages with themes of national heritage and patriotism.
Speaking to NewsDay Life & Style’s Tendai Sauta, Zenda explained that Heroes Day holds deep personal meaning. He views it as a time to honour the sacrifices of liberation war heroes who fought for independence. He believes many Zimbabweans see the day as a moment of reflection, gratitude, and celebration of hard-won freedom. For Zenda, it is also a reminder of the bravery and resilience that built the nation.
As a creative, Zenda marks Heroes Day and Defence Forces Day by producing works that connect with the country’s history. He often creates art pieces that pay tribute to national heroes and celebrate military achievements. His projects have included exhibitions highlighting Zimbabwe’s cultural diversity and works dedicated to liberation war heroes.
Zenda acknowledges the challenge of balancing personal artistic expression with the broader national narrative. He says it is important to stay true to his vision while respecting the significance of these days. For him, authenticity and sensitivity are essential in producing work that genuinely reflects his experiences and perspective.
Looking to the future, Zenda hopes younger generations will embrace patriotism, sacrifice, and resilience as values tied to these national days. He believes artists and other creatives have a role in shaping how these commemorations are understood. By creating works that explore both historical significance and fresh perspectives, Zenda says the legacy of Zimbabwe’s heroes can continue to inspire for generations to come.
