Leonard “Karikoga” Zhakata Urges Young Musicians to Uphold Discipline and Integrity

ZORA music icon Leonard “Karikoga” Zhakata has called on young and upcoming musicians to maintain discipline, integrity, and professionalism in their careers.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services offices in Masvingo last Tuesday, Zhakata, now a pastor with the United Family International Church (UFIC) founded by Prophet Emmanuel Makandiwa, warned against common pitfalls in the music industry.
He said many young artists are driven by greed for money and fame, exposing themselves to cyber crimes, drugs, substance abuse, and other vices.
“The music industry ordinarily requires the highest level of discipline, integrity, and adherence to music industry professional ethics. Setbacks in the music industry include the involvement of musicians in cyber crimes, drugs and substance abuse, among other forms of immoral behaviour,” Zhakata said.
He emphasized that drug and substance abuse undermine the dignity and moral standing of musicians, calling for a collective effort to safeguard the industry.
Reflecting on his own career, Zhakata highlighted the role of passion over profit. “I started my music career in 1987, and most importantly, I was not motivated by the desire for money and fame, but a strong passion for the field. I would therefore like to send a clear message to young people entering the music industry that they need to be passionate about music, and things like money, fame and other rewards will then follow,” he said.
Zhakata also acknowledged the support he received from Senator Charles Tavengwa, crediting him for both moral and financial assistance during the early stages of his career.
The celebrated sungura artist is currently participating in the UFIC miracle crusade in Masvingo city, continuing to inspire young musicians to pursue their craft with integrity and dedication.
