Lingiwe Patience Sifelani Publishes Debut Novel “Good for Nothing”

Renowned poet and musician Lingiwe Patience Sifelani has expanded her creative portfolio with the release of her debut novel, Good for Nothing. The launch took place recently in Gweru, marking her transition from poetry and music into prose storytelling.

Sifelani shared that storytelling had always been a passion. “I have always loved storytelling and discovered I had trouble summarising,” she told NewsDay Life & Style. “My poems became longer and I decided to write stories. I believe I preach better through short stories and novels.”

Good for Nothing follows the journey of a young girl from a poor background who faces numerous challenges before finding success. Sifelani described the writing process as cathartic, drawing on both personal and borrowed experiences of pain and heartbreak. “This story was inspired by personal and borrowed experiences of pain and heartbreaks. So, I sought possible ways of finding healing,” she explained.

The novel addresses a range of social issues, including girl child empowerment, family dynamics, societal expectations, and mental health. Sifelani emphasised literature as a tool for highlighting societal challenges and offering potential solutions. She hopes readers will find healing and inspiration through the story.

Balancing writing with her other commitments, Sifelani noted, “Since I’m passionate about writing, I always have time to write. I normally write in the early hours of the morning or late at night and it doesn’t disrupt my daily schedules or life commitments. Everything balances itself out.”

She also highlighted the importance of women sharing their stories. “We generally have a lot to say about the life and relationships we prefer, child nurturing, home making, cooking, preserving cultures or general livelihood. This will definitely be beneficial to future generations.”

Sifelani credited local authors Simbarashe Nyamadzawo and J Kawara, as well as international literary figures Maya Angelou and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, as key influences in her work.

The creative’s artistic journey includes her debut music album, Worthy of All My Praise, released in 2017, and a previously published poetry collection. With Good for Nothing, Sifelani continues to establish herself as a versatile storyteller and advocate for societal reflection through literature.
