Lioness Shumbakadzi Redefines Mbira, Culture and Women’s Leadership in Zimbabwe

From the first notes of the mbira, Shumbakadzi presents music that carries history, purpose and intention. Her sound connects traditional Zimbabwean culture with present day social realities. It speaks directly to issues of women’s visibility, cultural preservation and social justice. Through her work, she positions traditional music as relevant and necessary in today’s creative economy. Her growing influence reflects a shift in how heritage art forms are valued locally and internationally.

Born Florence Nyamazana and raised in Gokwe, she grew up surrounded by deep cultural traditions. In her community, the mbira played a central role in spiritual life, ceremonies and social gatherings. From a young age, she learned to understand the instrument as more than entertainment. This early exposure shaped her technical skill and cultural discipline. Over time, she developed into a nationally and globally recognised mbira performer.

Today, Nyamazana works across multiple creative and cultural fields. She is a mbira musician, performer, teacher, mentor and instrument maker. She also designs traditional jewellery and works as a visual artist and journalist. At Zimbolive TV, she produces cultural content focused on impact journalism. Her media work supports women affected by period poverty, maternity challenges and limited access to newborn care.

She describes herself as a cultural ambassador with a clear mission. Her goal is to preserve heritage and create opportunities for traditional artists, with a strong focus on women. She also aims to inspire young people to build identity and confidence through culture. With training in digital marketing and cultural management, she places traditional music in modern digital spaces. This approach expands reach while protecting cultural integrity.

Her leadership roles reflect her commitment to structural change in the arts sector. She serves as International Cultural Officer and Zimbabwe Chapter National Coordinator for 54 African Mamas. She is Vice President of the Chivavarira National Mbira, Arts and Culture Association. She also serves as a Trustee at the Zimbabwe Artists’ Benevolent Fund and leads the Ningadzenharira Cultural Group. Her involvement with the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Musicians’ Union strengthens her advocacy work.

Like many women in the arts, her journey includes moments of resistance and doubt. In 2014, she performed at a show in Chivhu that initially attracted a very small audience. A competing mainstream act affected attendance and morale. She chose to continue performing despite the setback. As the night progressed, more people arrived and the show ended successfully.

Nyamazana now promotes mbira music as a viable economic opportunity for women. She encourages artists to think as entrepreneurs and to use collaboration and digital platforms. She believes cultural work can support sustainable livelihoods when managed strategically. Her upcoming album features respected mbira artists Chaka Gwedeza and Takawira Devera. Through her work, Lioness Shumbakadzi shows how women can lead cultural growth and national transformation.
