Local Creatives Define Purpose and Direction as 2026 Begins

As local creatives step into 2026, the familiar conversation around new year resolutions takes on renewed meaning. For some artistes, resolutions are firm commitments that shape careers and creative output. For others, they serve as guiding intentions rooted in reflection and growth. What unites them is the pause that a new year creates. A chance to look back, recalibrate, and set a clear tone for what lies ahead.
Dorcas Moyo shared that growth remains central to her creative direction. She described her team as an ensemble driven to surpass previous achievements. They are currently working on a roadmap for a major project expected in the second half of the year, with collaborations playing a key role in shaping its final form.
Veteran musician Hosiah Chipanga enters 2026 focused on reconnecting with his audience through new music. He acknowledged missing an album release last year and feels he let down his loyal supporters. At the same time, he described 2025 as one of his strongest years in terms of visibility, marked by successful performances outside Mutare. He plans to release a new project with more than four tracks and to invest more in music videos. He also expressed concern over reduced radio airplay and hopes for improved support.
For Keavan Simomondo and Dapurahunanzva Arts Ensemble, 2026 represents a shift from survival to intentional growth. Their focus is on creating work with deeper purpose and wider reach. Audiences in Mutare can expect new projects and collaborations with organisations such as Chenhaka Trust, Mutare City Council, and Global View. The ensemble is strengthening its international outlook while remaining grounded in local identity. Community wellbeing is central to their mission, with creative interventions aimed at addressing drug and substance abuse among young people.
Carol Chidzikwe remains committed to consistency in gospel music. Her focus for the year is releasing new singles supported by quality music videos. She is also exploring the possibility of international collaborations if resources allow. Live performances remain a priority, with the stage viewed as a platform to minister, inspire, and spread the gospel message beyond borders.
Despite limited resources, Ndau Arts Festival is pressing forward with cultural advocacy. The organisation plans to launch a Ndau Language and Literature Book Expo in April. The project aims to showcase creative works published in Ndau and affirm the importance of writing and publishing in indigenous languages. It also highlights the role of creative organisations in cultural preservation and national development.
Musician Clayton Masekesa described 2026 as a defining year in his career. He is preparing to release a six-track album titled Homwe Dzachoboka, which is already complete. A music video from the project will accompany the release. After years of focusing on private shows, he plans to perform more public shows and pursue collaborations with Leonard Zhakata, Hosiah Chipanga, and Blessing Shumba. He also expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from his fans.
Afro musician WaCharie approaches the new year with a focus on intention and honesty. Reflecting on his previous project Manzwi Enzara, he described the past year as emotionally demanding yet transformative. His resolution is to create music that tells the truth, protect his sound and roots, and allow songs the time they need to grow and carry lasting meaning.
Lionel Caff Matanda enters 2026 driven by consistency and elevation. Drawing from years of live performance in Mutare, he plans to release new dance-focused music designed to energise audiences. He is also investing more in visuals to match the confidence and culture of his sound. Live performance remains central to his plans, with the goal of reaching more cities and delivering a full, high-energy experience.
As the year unfolds, these voices reflect a creative community grounded in purpose rather than pressure. Across music, theatre, and cultural work, local artistes are choosing direction, discipline, and authenticity. Their intentions point to a year defined not by resolutions alone, but by meaningful and sustained creative growth.
