Mai Dhuterere Cleared of Fraud Charges as Case Falls Apart

Gospel musician Mai Dhuterere, whose real name is Dorcas Vambe, has been cleared of fraud charges after the case against her fell apart, and she was removed from remand by Harare magistrate Tapiwa Banda. This comes as a major relief for the celebrated gospel artist, who had been facing serious allegations of defrauding a man of US$16,000.
The fraud case centered around an alleged scheme involving a deal for a Toyota GD6 vehicle. Prosecutors claimed that Vambe had used the name of President Emmerson Mnangagwa to facilitate the purchase, stating that the President had offered her a duty-free car import deal as a token of appreciation for her music. The prosecution alleged that Vambe, together with her brother Kudakwashe, approached Chrispen Magaya, a former Zanu PF candidate in Glen Norah constituency, claiming they could secure the car from a sale in Botswana.
Magaya, who was reportedly looking to purchase a Toyota Hilux GD6, was told that his budget would cover two vehicles instead of one. After agreeing to the deal and paying the money, Magaya later received a Ford Ranger with temporary plates instead of the agreed-upon vehicles. The Ford Ranger, which was said to have expired import documentation, was subsequently impounded by authorities.
Despite the serious nature of the charges, the case collapsed, and Mai Dhuterere was removed from remand. This legal victory comes at a time when the gospel singer’s personal life is also under intense scrutiny. Reports suggest that her marriage to fellow gospel musician Mambo Dhuterere is on the rocks, with her husband reportedly leaving her to raise their four children on her own. To add to the strain, it is also claimed that Mai Dhuterere is pregnant with another child.
While the fraud case has been dismissed, the saga continues to unfold with several twists, including the fallout from her husband’s departure and ongoing reports about the challenges she faces. However, for now, Mai Dhuterere can breathe a sigh of relief as the legal storm surrounding her seems to have cleared.
This incident has not only drawn attention to the personal challenges she is facing but also placed a spotlight on the pressures of being in the public eye, where both professional and personal lives often intertwine in the most unexpected ways.
