Master Zhoe: Gwanda’s Sungura Maestro Redefining Zimbabwean Music in 2025

Gwanda-based sungura musician and entrepreneur Thembinkosi Ndlovu, widely known as Master Zhoe, is redefining his musical journey through reinvention and strategic collaborations. At 40, he has built a reputation for blending local talent with South African artists, creating a unique sound that resonates across borders.

Speaking to Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, Master Zhoe described 2025 as a transformative year. He highlighted his efforts to experiment with new sounds and connect with diverse audiences. “The 2025 season has been a year of growth and new energy for me. I have been experimenting with new sounds, connecting with different audiences, and preparing projects that showcase my evolution as an artist,” he said.

Master Zhoe has been preparing fans for a festive season full of releases. His new single, “Musikana,” accompanied by a video, is set to drop this Saturday. He shared that the track took three months of careful production, promising an energetic reception. Fans can expect a blend of his signature sungura rhythm with fresh collaborations.

His discography includes seven albums, featuring partnerships with sungura legend Nicholas Zakaria and collaborations with artists like Nutty O, Professor Kawa from South Africa, Diliza, and Sandra Ndebele. Master Zhoe emphasized that his music celebrates his Matabeleland roots but remains inclusive. He is currently working on projects with artists from Mashonaland to create a broader musical dialogue.

“Music is universal, and I believe blending different styles and languages helps connect with a wider audience. I’m not biased; I just celebrate my roots and the stories of my people,” he explained.

Master Zhoe’s career has been marked by consistency and innovation. His album “Tsunami” elevated him to national acclaim, while collaborations with emerging artists like Nutty O, Khayalami featuring Percy, and Mzoe 7 show his commitment to nurturing talent across Zimbabwe. His live performances are noted for their choreography and stage mastery, earning him a loyal fan base in Gwanda, Victoria Falls, Beitbridge, and beyond.

The musician’s influence extends into South Africa, particularly in Limpopo and Gauteng provinces, where his collaborations have amplified his reach. By bridging regional sounds and styles, Master Zhoe has cemented himself as a leading figure in Zimbabwean music, thriving on hard work, creativity, and resilience.
